Delilah Out at Star 99.9

Someone posted on June 30th that STAR 99.9 had reduced the number of hours the show aired. In the same thread someone mentioned that COX was planning on dumping the show all together eventually.

Now if only someone at 10 Executive Drive in Farmington would do the same, everything would be good. I guess its different because in CBS's case WRCH airs the show overnights 12-5 rather than live 7-12. Its only on Saturday/Sunday that it airs 7-5.

I was listening both Friday and tonight, and no Delilah. Seems surprising that they'd dump her... anyone know the story?

Really?

How can you stand her sappy, saccharine-overload of a presentation? She's horrible, absolutely horrible!

In fact, the only thing more shocking to me than that she has a Fairfield County affiliate is that she remains on the air on WLTW! Her show is more suited to female trailer park residents of inland Florida than to an area with some semblance of sophistication.

If Cox dumped her (as dozens of men surely have in the past), I congratulate them for making a wise programming decision..... ;D

Were you one of the men? You say "surely", so I was just wondering. Or was it a matter of changing the dial dumping?

Delilah has a huge following, and who is to say what is the level of "sophistication" in Fairfield County? Maybe sophisticates occasionally turn out to be real people with real hearts too. Maybe not, on the other hand, but one would expect that they might at least be treated as such. I have former colleagues and associates who moved there several years ago, and they are not what you might consider sophisticated or elite, although they have a great deal of class and a whole lot of character. You can tell it was where they came from too.

As for trailers in Florida, I am not sure about those, but I can tell you that there are some in California that are outrageously valuable, as well as expensive, with a view to die for.

It would seem that she has an age issue with some. That seems to be the undertone.

Delilah is a soothing voice in the night, who gets the intimacy and personality that radio is capable of.
I'm glad that Delilah's custom feed for the New York metro area can still be heard on WLTW. But I had also enjoyed listening to the national version of her show on Star 99.9 once in a while, as a change of pace.
Now WEZN at night is apparently running jockless.

I love it when people who obviously aren't in the target demographic of a certain show/format get in here and unequivocally declare that show/format utter garbage, as if no one could possibly be enjoying that show/format so why not replace it with out-of-work local talent/rock-based music/dead air.

Fact is Delilah's show has lasted because it has indeed found a loyal, enthusiastic audience in the nighttime hours when radio listening is low. Most stations aren't going to yank that and replace it with live-and-local; they'll either find a cheaper satellite-fed show or go autopilot.

No, the fact is that it's dreck. Delilah's show is sappy, gooey, dreck. Listeners to it can actually feel their IQs drop with each quarter hour spent listening. I don't need to be in the right demo to recognize the smell of excrement - and her show reeks of it!! Furthermore, it's bad for "local" radio overall - yet another enticement for management to ditch the local host and take this mind-numbing crap off of the bird.

Hate to admit it, but even John Tesh is far better - and he also serves that same target demo. At least his show has some interesting tidbits of information to offer. And his voice doesn't give me type II diabetes.

And the lower the IQ, the more gullible the listener is, and advertisers want 'em stupid and gullible, always have. Again, not your kind of radio, but stupid people's money is worth the same as yours -- and is more easily pried from them by a slick sales pitch.

Depending upon how much radio you listen to, and the formats, it would appear that we are somewhat between an era of lack of self-restraint complete with all of its wiles and crassness, and an increasingly bygone era of grace, class, civility and dignity.

Anytime Delilah's program interfered with what I wanted to hear it annoyed me, but she is indeed a member of that latter class of people described above. There are people who are crass and classless who are doted on, while people who just want to live in peace and harmony are just bugged to pieces.

CTListener, I am disappointed in your last post. Your previous one made a lot of sense, stating: "People who obviously aren't in the target demographic of a certain show/format get in here and unequivocally declare that show/format utter garbage...fact is Delilah's show has lasted because it has indeed found a loyal enthusiastic audience..."
Then BRNout posts, apparently for no better reason that he personally dislikes Delilah's show (if he has indeed even bothered listening to it), that it is crap whicjh makes people's IQ go down. And you then indicate it is for stupid people ??? . Please provide some proof Delilah appeals to stupid individuals.

I was just trying to somewhat cynically counter BRNOut's argument by saying that, if Delilah's listeners are, indeed, losing IQ points by the minute, then they'd be increasingly attractive to advertisers. Cynicism, like sarcasm, doesn't always translate well to the written word. For the record, I don't actually hold that opinion of Delilah's listeners, but I stand by what I said about advertisers.

I think a bigger point is that Delilah 2011 isn't Delilah 2001... or even Delilah 1990's... or for those of us from the Boston area, Delilah 1980's. The show's watered down, not live anymore, multiple versions are produced. PPM was also not kind to Delilah. I think the transparency of PPM has shown that her diary numbers were padded, and that her popularity with her core isn't as strong as it once was. She still has a core audience, she still has a value, but it's nowhere near as strong as it once was.

I'd take local talent over Delilah any day in larger markets. I think syndication like her is great in smaller markets with very limited resources, but personally I like to see prudent, well thought-out programming investments in stations.
