Kind of like when Rick Dees would give out his number to "call live on the Weekly Top 40" but the number he always gave was 1-800-RICKDEES, which produced one digit too many.

They still work from some phones (mostly land lines) - dialing the extra digit at the end connects you to the right number, as you know.

Some phone numbers have very few mnemonic possibilities, and adding a random final digit can open up more options.
