Demise of Renda’s 1360

Re: Demise of Renda’s 1360

How did it do back then?

I ask that because I do hear people talk about WMCK and WIXZ relating to that time.

Obviously that is because of employing Rush Limbaugh as Jeff Christie, but regardless.

Re: Demise of Renda’s 1360

WIXZ's first book (Spring 1969) was its best book with a 4.9 share 12+. KQV was still in double digits, so WIXZ was more of a "thorn in the side" than a threat.

I can't speak to WMCK, but I doubt that it ever pulled a five share 12+ in the Pittsburgh market.

C.

Re: Demise of Renda’s 1360

Jeff Christie the savior? Yeah right... how about the Wilde Childe Dick Kemp? I was a kid growing up in Cleveland listening to WIXY 1260. As I recall Dick Kemp was transfered to 1360...great jock. I recalled moving my radio around to pick up 1360 at night on the east side of Cleveland(Solon) just to hear him back in the day.

Re: Demise of Renda’s 1360

Lynn Cullen was the most obnoxious broadcaster back when I used to watch her in the 80's & 90's. I can only imagine what the years have done to her. Hopefully she has mellowed and isn't so "in your face" and hyper.

The last time I heard her (and saw her) was about this time last year doing some of her show on cable TV. She definitely was not hyper. I think the word that best described her was "somnambulant".

Tony Renda did a good job driving his little station into the ground.

These stations can thrive but it takes a commitment that Renda won’t make. He’s like most broadcasters who just want short term profits.

It could work as a local community stations with local news, high school sports and information programs.

Syndicated business programming works for cable tv, but not a small 5000 watt station with very limited reach. Once the lies and hype wares off, depression will soon set in.

"It could work" is a very relative term. If working is defined as billing $1,000 a week that doesn't work for people with real commitments to real banks. That's not greed, that's big boy grown up business.

Re: Demise of Renda’s 1360

If Monday and Tuesday are any indication, the new Money Talk 1360 consists of all financial infomercials all the time. Each of the shows seem to advance certain stocks and companies, take very few calls and sound like long form infomercials disguised as talk shows. Renda is certainly not paying to run this stuff. To the contrary, he's probably laughing all the way to the bank. One small step about the quacks on 620 and 770, and that's no compliment. It's been removed from my presets as of today.

Don't be too harsh on Tony. 1360 was, until about 1999 or whenever he bought it back from Serena, THE local voice for the Mon Valley. They had high school sports, local news, the whole nine yards. Alan marketed that station very well and yet it was still a challenge to make ends meet. Tony came in and made the changes, and it did very well in the beginning. He had billboards for Lynn Cullen and Uncle Dougie everywhere. Now there's a shift in the wind...and he did what he had to do.

I worked for the man for five years. Tony's brought many stations from the brink of disaster and turned them into moneymakers. I can tell you that the man is not satisfied with his stations doing well...it's how they can be better. Better than today, tomorrow, whatever. And his people play a huge role in that.

I doubt he’s laughing all the way to the bank. I think crying is more like it. And they’ll be more crying to bankers. Renda takes those programs in exchange for avails to run spots, it’s “tradio” not radio. And it won’t be easy to sell to local direct clients, their life blood. Trust me no ad agencies will be calling to book time either.

Cry me a river of tears.

I have the tee shirt to prove it..

Re: Demise of Renda’s 1360

Nobody lasts for long with TR, I’m ex-Renda too, I was with TR for 7 years. I’ll say TR is engaging and fun to have dinner with and probably a nice guy at church, but he suffers from blind ambition and will crush all employees while in the process of getting what he wants. He’s like a big spoiled rotten kid who only cares about what he wants. Or, TR is so hardened by this business that he has no feelings or emotions left. Business is business, but there’s a better way to treat his employees who made him rich without giving away the store. And I’m not talking about 1360.

The ice at Clear Channel and Cox is 100% colder Renda is the cloned wannabe amateur version.

Re: Demise of Renda’s 1360

I discovered Renda has a poor rap in the industry. Tony’s employee turn over is very high. Industry leaders have a high regard for anyone who managed to last more than a couple with RBC. They figure you must have done something right to have lasted that long with Tony Renda, The little crazy Italian man.

His turnover is only high in the sales department, the same as it is everywhere else. His top producers stay and the others who can't hack it are out. The other departments and key positions are relatively steady.

Re: Demise of Renda’s 1360

Tony goes through GM’s & sales management too like toilet paper. I guess from what I witnessed the business office is pretty stable. Those who stay have no other options, they produce while hacking insanity and being screamed at a lot.
I guess that's the same everyplace. TR is not worth having heart problems over.
life is very short my friend. You'll see.

Re: Demise of Renda’s 1360

What he has on 1360 is just junk and somehow everytime they tweak WSHH is gets worse.

Re: Demise of Renda’s 1360

Does this mean the 1360 / 910 swap is over? I could never understand that Idea: If he wanted to be closer to 1020 KDKA, 890 was Approved for peters twp. but never built. Why did Renda not apply for that freq. it would have been cheaper. or buy 1080 and their 50k daytime power, already a Pittsburgh Outlet?

Re: Demise of Renda’s 1360

I don't think the dial position on 910 was the issue as much as it just being a better signal, but yes it's dead.

Personally I think if he had moved PTT's talk programming to 1320 a few years ago it might have had a better chance at survival.

Re: Demise of Renda’s 1360

Had nothing to do with KD's dial position at all. 910 would have become a useable frequency 24/7 and might have become the second strongest AM signal in the market. 1080 is only licensed at 50Kw for about two hours a day. 890 has some nighttime issues that would have made it less attractive. But in this business climate where the whole radio world is awash in red ink nobody is going to that expense.
