Denise Brewer?

I hear rumblings that Denise Brewer & Marshall Stewart are coming back to Tulsa radio.

Do you suppose AM 740 & FM 102.3, News-Talk KRMG is bringing them back?

According to the rumblings I've heard, you both have said correct things. :)

If so, I would bet your entire salary that MS isn't going back to KRMG. After all, Denise Brewer is a former TV newscaster, which is what most of KRMG's on-air staff seems to consist of anymore.

I will confirm since both Denise and Marshall have been out on the street representing KWGS already.

Denise is joining us as an anchor. Marshall will focus on special in-depth/investigative stories. Our news website is up and running. Our news hotline at 631-NEWS (thought that up myself) is working.

We will begin regular newscasts soon.

WOW... now THAT'S cool!

Was listening to Glen Schroder on tape at 7 this evening (not his fault), wondering about the possible storms to the west, wondering about the condition of the man who had part of the bridge fall on him this morning, wondering... just wondering what was going on around town, & knowing I couldn't get an answer from Glen-On-Tape.

Denise has always sounded fantastic, on TV & on radio; Marshal's a veteran of the Tulsa streets who I'm sure will dig up some great stuff. (How about the smell at Floral Haven that The News on 6's been talking about?)

This is GREAT news for Tulsa, great news for Tulsa radio.

Maybe not-so-good news for KRMG & KFAQ. :D

Well you're right of course but I'm curious why you said that.

Congratulations John, I wish the 3 of you and everyone else at KWGS the best of luck.

On a different topic, why does KRMG air some newscasts on tape in the evenings, but on weekend evenings they're aired live? Anyone care to explain?

Pretty dadblamed impressive -- my alma mater's non-comm has more news talent than you'll find in some complete markets. (Actually, that was already the case before adding these two to Dr. Durkee.)

Quagmire, I think I can at least partially answer why weeknights are Memorex & weekend nights are live.

For years, KRMG has been lucky enough to have a guy (Tollie Toliver I believe is his name) who has been steady as the north star to work weekend nights. He can only work Saturday & Sunday nights, has a good weekday job, & needs one weekend off a year I think, but he's 100% rock solid. The world would end before he wasn't there for his shift & doing a great job.

If he's still there, he's always been willing and able to produce & anchor his own newscasts. The guys running board at night typically either weren't allowed or weren't able to crack the mic. In order to get someone to do news weeknights, I'm sure they figure they'd have to pay more than they do... & at that point you might as well have a regular newscaster in the booth.

All of the above is speculation, & may not have any basis in reality. Your mileage may vary. Close cover before striking.

Why would he go back?

Why would anyone go back to the radio/newspaper/tv station they were at when let go due to cutbacks? It seems as though there was someone back several years ago who was let go and then came back to KRMG....was it Durkee or maybe Richard Dowdell? My memory fails me, I may have that completely wrong. It also seems that recently others within Tulsa media were let go due to budget cutbacks and then were brought back.

But the point is people need jobs and jobs in the media aren't overflowing. Marshall has been in the business a long time and my guess is he actually enjoys what he does....and again people need a job to pay their bills and support their families. Of course I'm not saying that Marshall would go back. My bet is that he is very excited about this opportunity to be working again with John and helping to get the local news initiative at KWGS up and running.

It's nice to be able to hear a number of the stories KWGS News is doing on the website at http://www.kwgs.org. I don't think either KRMG or KFAQ are doing that, & it would be nice to have it (like the TV stations archive their video reports sometimes).

Just an observation: I'm also pretty impressed that neither Durkee, nor Brewer, nor Marshall Stewart (great to hear him on the air again!) sound "NPR'd." You know what I mean: the mellow, formal, bland delivery NPR has (fairly or unfairly) gotten a reputation of providing. See the "Delicious Dish" skit on Saturday Night Live for reference: http://www.nbc.com/Saturday_Night_Live/video/clips/nprs-delicious-dish-schweddy-balls/2846/

All three sound... pretty much like they've always sounded! That is to say, GREAT. It's certainly a relaxed delivery, but it's not sleepy-time... & I can only think that's good for the listeners.

Way to go, KWGS! (Please don't mess these broadcasters up!) :)
