Denny McKeown Hammers Bonneville Over The Loss Of His WUBE Gardening Show

The local gardening columnist had hosted a weekly radio program for three decades. After airing on various news/talk stations, it most recently ended up on country B-105.

Effective this week, McKeown is being replaced by another gardening expert, Tony Works, and renamed "In And Around The House," and will air in the same time slot as McKeown's "Outdoor Living" program had run over the last three years.

The Enquirer's John Kiesewetter reached out to McKeown for a comment on the development, and here's what he had to say: "They were taking up to 24 minutes an hour for commercials. I didn’t have enough time to give tips out. I couldn’t get in any phone calls and the ratings went down."

Here's a person who hosts a popular local radio show that's selling out 40% of its broadcast time, still giving him 60% to work with. Does he have it written into his contract that his program demands at least 110 minutes of airtime per show? I mean, think about it... Here's somebody who's complaining about his own show selling spots. Doesn't make sense to me. Be glad that your show is selling... and find a way to balance the content on your show so that it meets your needs... after all, you've been doing this for 30 years, Denny!

So what's the next radio stop for this gardening guru going to be? Will Clear Channel take him back? How about WQRT?

Since he seems to have a problem with the entire freaking concept of commercial radio, perhaps he should just start going door-to-door passing out mulch?

I honestly don't know...I'm with you: complaining that your show is generating revenue?????? It's nice to stop and smell the roses, but what the hell ELSE are you sniffing????

While Denny is widely recognized as THE local gardening expert, he is a major pain to work with. Anyone tempted to hire him for the potential revenue will have their hands full.

No wonder He is complaining with that outrageous number of commercials. I think He had a less spot load on his former station.

How can you even do a topic some justice?
"Lets go to the phones"
"Hi, i am calling with a tulip problem..."
"We'll be right back"
"Now, whats your problem, tulips?"
"Yes, they aren't red"
"We'll get you some help, right after this..."

Seriously, 24 minutes!?!?

A lot of syndicated talkers have about that because of the network spots. Clark Howard's show has 23:30 of spots, and therefore only 36:30 of content, but he manages to talk about credit cards and car insurance every day. ESPN Radio's Colin Cowherd has 20 minutes of spots, 3 minutes of SportsCenter updates, and still manages to rail on the NFL owners for their lock out every day. Limbaugh and Laporte are both over 20 minutes of spots.

I think Dave Ramsey is at about 14 or 18 minutes, total. Its been a while since i looked at his clock. He takes 6, affiliates get the rest.
You'd think that 18 would be enough. Wasn't that the old FCC standard?

Well, lets see where he lands. Hard to believe that the new team brings anything else to the table.

I remember 18 an hour being fairly standard on the very successful small market station where I started. During election periods, it'd be 24. Short records were in demand.

I've been cracking up over this post all weekend, especially the part about going door to door passing out mulch.  Classic!
