Denny Schaffer lands at... 103-7 CKY?

Believe it! Complete credit to OMW:

This is interesting for a number of reasons. First off, Denny - who is one of Glenn Beck's top fill-in hosts - is now hosting a two-hour VTed show on the mother of all rimshots, a sizable Tiffin FM station that never would be able to move into Toledo. Not that there's anything wrong with that... if anything, it's PD Johnny D looking out for a former collegue of his. But it ain't morning drive on KISS-FM in Toledo, or afternoons on WSPD, or mid-mornings on a 50000 watt station in Atlanta (which, alas, WASN'T WSB-AM but the horribly mis-managed WGST.)

But the other detail is that WCKY-FM quietly dumped the "Buckeye Country" name a few weeks back for "103-7 CKY." Odd for a station that would have to cede those calls away after whomever buys it in a presumed sale by CC (be it BAS, Elyria-Lorain, Saga, VOX, etc.) and possibly revert to WTTF-FM (or to something else).

There are plenty of stations with xxxx-AM and xxxx-FM under different ownership, so no, WCKY-FM wouldn't necessarily have to find new calls.

Of course, if they could get WHMQ...those calls have a history in the Findlay area!

On the other hand, what significance does "WCKY" have in Northwest Ohio? They mean "Cincinnati-Kentucky" of which 103.7 is neither. CC had their own reasons for warehousing those calls (though I can't imagine what it was) in Tiffin but perhaps a new identity is in order for this station. WHMQ? Wouldn't that be the third place those calls have turned up?

Simple: "We're BuCKeYe Country:" the statewide positioner for almost all CC country music stations since late 1999 or so. WGAR also was tagged with the "Buckeye" name for several years. It's still used by a handful of stations, including WCOL-FM (obvious, since it IS in Columbus).

When Jacor/CC bought 103.7, it still simulcast WTTF/1600 for part of the day, and both signed off at 10pm or so. They elected to take a seperate identity for the FM station completely, which may have been the only reason WCKY-FM came about. Note that the Cincinnati market has never seen a WCKY-FM, so they were never had been used before on the FM band.

If Clear Channel were to sell WCKY-FM, they made it clear the call sign would stay with San Antonio.

And yes, originally they did plan to sell it.

However, WCKY-FM will now remain in the Clear Channel family.

Okay, so suppose 103.7 stays with the Clear Channel Family, it will be managed out of Toledo. They wont let the ya-hoo's of Lima run that thing. Since Johny and Billy dont get along so well..

Anyhow, 103.7 was supposed to be part of the BAS deal. I never heard any changes on that. However if they do go to Clear Channel it wont be for long. They will try to sell it to another operator, trust me. It doesnt pull enough revenue for Bain to be happy!

I agree and don't understand their thinking. I cannot imagine there is enough interest in Findlay to maintain operation there.

Perhaps keeping 103.7 is leverage to swap for another freq?

Who is Billy?

It was part of the first two BAS deals and now it is not.

But that could change.

Well, Cumulus just spun off two decent signals in the Toledo market, WXKR and WTWR. Therefore, another group would have to buy both of the Stratus Trust stations, so a third party needs have to be involved... (especially since it's inconcieveable for Cumulus to want to damage country powerhouse K-100 by their own hands!)

Aside from that, the bidding war for the clusters would HAVE to go down now with CC keeping WCKY-FM - make it, WAY, WAY DOWN - given that a prized class B signal is now off the table.

WXKR and WTWR are in the Stratus trust. Not officially "spun off" to another owner. There are rumors... but not strong enough to mention. And no BAS is not among the rumored.
