KXKL 105.1 really tumbled in December, the weeks before the actual Christmas holiday. I believe they were playing Christmas music 24/7. Listeners don't want to hear holiday music all month, just the week before Christmas.

Although I do in part agree with you that listeners don't want to hear holiday music all month, especially in the month of November, many do and the earlier the better, as long as it is from the "established" Christmas station in the market.

Most stations switch to Christmas music around the Thanksgiving holiday, some as early as the weekend before. Last year KOOL 105 switched to Christmas music at 5pm Friday November 9, roughly a week to ten days earlier than you would expect, but not the first to do so. Several stations across the country switched earlier than November 9.

KOSI 101.1, the dominant leader in Christmas music for the last decade, wasted no time in turning on their Christmas music at 6pm Friday November 9, only one hour after KOOL. As the ratings surely show, they were not negatively impacted by the early switch. The real answer here is that it was KOOL 105's listeners that were not interested in Christmas music either on November 9 or throughout the holiday season. KOSI's listeners apparently loved it.
