Denver Jack rumored to be changing formats

altho there are conflicting reports. (I can hear it now: Go away, you're on the wrong board. I know...)

Denver was the first Jack I listened to via www. So when I got in my car that fateful day in aught-5 already tuned to 96.3, and heard a song which I didn't think fit the format at all, then 1 which maybe might have, then heard the voice, I knew Jack had come to town (sort of like Ruby).

What is the future of Jack in general and 96.3 in particular?

A the time 96.3 flipped to Jack, Jack was a fresh format with an attitude. Now, both the format and the attitude are waning thin, because the crowd that loved it best are always looking for new and fresh. The variety hits format came about to better compete with the iPod, and the iPod has been winning the battle (Gee, every song my iPod plays, I like!).

96.3 has slipped enough now to have South Central thinking about what it would take to get 96.3 riding high again. It will stay Jack until SC can find the next sure-fire hot format. But where/what is it?

I believe we are beginning to see the end of the thinking in radio that we are primarily about music. With competition from iPods, satellite, Pandora, and car WiFi, and with the looming artist royalty bill, radio should, as I've said before, stop thinking about itself as the promotion arm of the record industry. The next era of radio will be more about "shows" rather than music.

The sports and talk stations get this. The morning show hosts get this. But listeners who no longer turn to your station to hear music, may soon be turning to your station to hear a "show." Instead of your station having an identity as playing a certain type of music, with a semi-present voice, the identity will soon belong to the voice, the personality behind the voice, or the type of information the voice is providing. And that includes shows where a personality plays and introduces music (hello 1950s and 60s).

There were some LP's left? Hell, I thought they were thrown like frisbees to the hill across 109. ;D

This means "Breakfast With O.J." may come back as "Community Service with O.J."! :D

Disclaimer: "This is O.J. Simpson, reminding you if you can't be a good sport, don't play."

Interestingly, KJAC-FM is the only station with the "Jack" branding that does not employ the services of Howard Cogan... or shall I say, was the only "Jack" station... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KJAC]They're said to have been stunting since April 19[/url].

If that's how the oil company wants to spend its marketing budget and its syndicator can sign up enough stations... yes. Or did you mean the Jack Shell Dinner Hour? ::)

Maybe they can flip to Gen-X Radio. Seems to be working in Louisville, and it is in another market or two.

soundsandsports said the first thing that came to my mind - Gen X. It's not too far off what they're already playing and given all the colleges and young professionals in nashville, surely there's a market. I know many of my friends would welcome it, including me! I really enjoyed the one in Louisville when driving through. I like Jack and listen to it all day in the office because of the slight variety that makes it the only station we can all agree on (Guy version of Mix 92.9). That's a strong signal to toy around with, but the Nashville radio market is saturated with Rock stations and Jack currently falls into the edge of that category. 92.9 does play many of the same songs that Jack does (the softer ones obviously) - I'm on board with Gen X. Similar, but side note, anyone thought much of "94.7 Fresh FM" in DC for Nashville?

Love ya man, but Jack ain't slippin. Was #4 last book, now #3 as of new numbers today (behind another station in the same bldg and one beating to a slightly different beat.) Those are 25-54.

By the way Rupert and Kings of Leon thrilled listeners to all our favorite station ~ #1 with huge numbers!!!
I guess "Celebration" is in high order and rotation.

Jack's kickin' butt today! Great variety and less automated boringness. They're having the request-a-thon for the Red Cross. There's actually people live. I've heard Ace of Bass, Lady Gaga, Blackeyed Peas (I'ma Be), George Jones, Johnny Cash, Wenus (who?). Although lady gaga and blackeyed peas, for example, aren't my favorites, it is nice to hear a broader variety out of the same ol same ol.
