Denver: Life After CBS Radio

Since CBS Radio sold KWLI-FM, KIMN-FM and KXKL-FM to Wilks Broadcasting, how have these three stations been, life after CBS Radio?

Is the smaller broadcasting company able to keep the stations up to the level of CBS? Has much of the staff (on-air and off) stayed with the stations? As far as programming, promotions-- would the new ownership otherwise be unnoticeable to a listener's perspective, or have things really gone on the cheap?

I think what happened in Denver won't be unusual for CBS Radio in the year to come. It'd be interesting to know what you guys-- Denver residents and in-the-know-- have to say. Thanks!

Well you could go to their websites and see for yourself actually. That would be the wisest thing to do reallly so you can see who has stayed or not stayed.. If you want it eaiser go to www.radio-locator.com and type in Denver and hit enter. You well see the stations, and all you have to do is click on KWOF, or KIMN, or KXKL and you can see who as stayed or who hasn;t. I can tell you right now HD radio listening for those stations on line is gone forever expect for Willie for some reason they decided to keep willie on..

I would think that Wilks has done a good job on bringing back Live radio but we well all see what the ratings well be this time around in the fall or winter for the summer. SO far i like what he has done to Mix 100.. it is what MIx 100 should have been along time ago instead of being like 80's todays and 90's mix.. Jeff got it right for once on that station it is really amazing on what he has done to make that station a much better station to listen to. For the others KOOL 105 well i think adding in upbeat music to the oldies is a good idea it makes a good mix of blended music. For the Wolf, well for todays country for this generation(whatever that is) country music is just that most country music stations here in colorado plays what 92.5 plays already.

But yeah to go radio-locator.com and look at the stations websites to found out more.

Hi Lauren: Lurking from the Phoenix board huh:)
Wilks has gone on the cheap, but as a listener you really would not know. Mix made a change from a "faux 40" station back to a upbeat non aggresive H.A.C. big focus on the heritage morning show, which is the only show in the cluster that makes money. Rest of the day is shut up and play the music. KOOL is a classic hits, no Elvis or really anything older than 1970. No morning show to speak of, just a jock and a news guy and lots of music the rest of the day is also shut up and play the music. No interesting jocks very bland M.O.R style station.
I have no idea what the WOLF sounds like never listened to it never will.
They jetisoned A LOT of the old staff and those that remained got a healty pay cut plus a 8 hour a day requirement + a weekend shift live. They don't really voice track a lot but frankly you would never know the difference, weather is the only local thing they do, the rest is "Idol" chatter.
To their credit they are running TV and have cash contests on KOOL and MIX. From a business prespective it was a good move, they paid 19 mill for all three and will make good coin on it because the debt service is 0. Are the stations better off under Wilks? Probably so. Are the jocks better off? No way. Thanks for looking in on us, sorry you couldn't get your questioned answered the first time.

Hey rustyzipper! Lurking around from Phoenix, indeed. ;)

Thanks very much for taking your time to write and answer. You answered everything I needed to know, in my worried, curious mind. Very interesting to know how stations change or don't change with new ownership. I haven't personally observed such a thing yet.

CBS Radio wants to cut costs by $80 million this year. I feel we'll be seeing much more of this occurring elsewhere, and overall-- I support it. Deconsolidate. I just hope the stations are for the most part, in better hands.

Thanks again for your great analysis! Appreciate it.

Is "allnumberoneradio.com" still available on the HD-2 at least?? It doesn't stream anymore, but can you at least get it on HD Radio in Denver?? That was a good stream while it lasted.

They don't seem to have any of those HD channels listed anymore eventhough they say the sites are under construction. The koololdiesonline and that all 80s one were good. I hope they bring them back for streaming. If not what a jip.

That's what I'm trying to find out. Obviously they are not streaming the audio any more, but I was wondering if anyone in Denver could tell me whether or not they were still available as HD-2s?? www.hdradio.com lists them as if they were, and does list the updated ownership change to Wilks. But you have to take those listings with a grain of salt.

Additionally, it says 92.5 HD-3 is "AOR"....Wonder if "I hear dead people" is on there now.

Jeff Sanders. I don't think I've ever encountered anyone as universally despised and thought of as being a fool.
