DePetro Pulled Off Air For Slur

From the Boston Herald!

http://news.bostonherald.com/localRegional/view.bg?articleid=148906&format=text

Shock jock wannabe John DePetro has been yanked off the air for two days and ordered to apologize for calling embattled Big Dig chief Matt Amorello a “------” yesterday on his morning radio show.

“This corporation has zero tolerance for racial intolerance. Mr. DePetro has 72 hours to think about it,” said Jason Wolfe, vice president of programming at WRKO (680) and WEEI-AM (850).

Dear Mr. Wolfe and Ms. Kahn:

WRKO has given John Depetro more opportunities than most.

There is NO PLACE for gay slurs on WRKO. Whenever a jock has to "hit below the belt" it is because they are insecure, lack integrity, and realize they have no talent. Of course when he's tied with a Worcester station for 18th place, according to Jessica Heslam's article in the Boston Herald (1), it is obvious Depetro is hoping to get some traction with his own "Metco" scandal. And - heck - since Michael Savage (2) is still on the air after his horrifying remarks - Jason Wolfe's claim in the Herald: "This corporation has zero tolerance for racial intolerance" is lip service, just lip service.

There are a lot of quality on-air personalities coming up out of New England Institute Of Art, Emerson College and the University of Lowell. There are some Boston radio legends who have the ability to generate far better ratings - though they lean more towards the progressive side of the equation - something WRKO is loathe to accept.

Rush Limbaugh in a drug scandal; Dennis & Callahan with the Metco fiasco; Mike Savage going beyond potty mouth, and Howie Carr bringing up "the virus" to slam any gay person whenever he gets the urge, this is what Jason Wolfe calls "zero tolerance"?

On one level Depetro never really fit in to the Boston radio waves. Heslam's article in the Boston Herald should make it clear that John Depetro is not welcome in this blue state. On the bigger level, perhaps it is time for WRKO to really clean up its act. These used to be, after all, the "Public" airwaves!

John Depetro had a golden opportunity to go after the corruption that led to the death of a woman. That would take some hard work and many hours of research. But he has taken the low road - it's much easier for him to be a "shock jock" and use a slur. Like many other has-been Boston on-air personalities who can dish it out but can't take it, John Depetro lacks character. I intend to start boycotting all WRKO advertisers until Mr. Depetro is fired.

Sincerely,

Joe Viglione

MSNBC Fires Savage After anti-Gay Remarks
The Associated Press Monday 07 July 2003

Hire a college radio talent to host a talk show at a big heritage talk station? Is that the kind of sage advice that go you chucked out of radio decades ago?

DePetro, Ozzie Guillen......both like to use the 3-letter f-word and neither can speak proper English.

It's odd what is a fiasco in one town and commonplace in another. Down here in Phoenix, jocks regularly call people f*gs with no repercussions. I confess I was a bit shocked when I first heard that kind of talk, but it's hardly the most denigrating term I've heard. The reality is it is used much the same way d*ck, a**h*ole, and sissy are used. I've heard it on Will & Grace, used pretty much in a context I would use to call one of my own friends an ass when he shot his mouth off. Is it really that bad, is Boston just super sensitive, is Phoenix just a cowboy town, or all of the above?

Enter/Intercom (probably John Depetro) writes: Hire a college radio talent to host a talk show at a big heritage talk station? Is that the kind of sage advice that go you chucked out of radio decades ago?

pretty funny for these "newbies" who know oh so much! Someone is being defensive and trying to change the subject to me. Great. I love to talk about me!

Intercom - with your minimum posts - get a clue. My sage advice is that the stuttering weekend jocks on
WZLX would be a boon compared to the goons WRKO hires, so ANY college hire would be able to do better than (excuse me while I laugh) coming in 18th place on 680 AM. Wow. Real impressive.

I achieved what I wanted over at WCGY and launched my TV show after producing at a 50,000 watt station.
According to the suits at WCGY our Sunday night show was #1 in the arbitrons. We had a lot of fun - but it was too much work and with Curt Gowdy's son Trevor dropping the advertising rates on a whim, it did a number on the economics. Unlike you, I get paid for my work. Guess when you're prepping a station for sale to Entercom (Mike FM! HA!) employees are not the #1 concern.

And what have you done in your 19 years on the planet? The TV - and radio - I do for fun. Obviously, all you have is the internet. Enjoying yourself yet?

But - as stated - someone (probably an Entercom staffer called Intercom) is trying to change the subject quick. Now that we've talked about me, can we get back to the topic - John Depetro's failure to get ratings and his use of a gay slur!

I guess it was the kisss of death when I praised him the other day... ;)

racial term...? derogatory, but not racial.

Ray Davies can continue to say that he loves his fags the best, since he's talking about cigarettes in
British slang.

Boston Radio Watch article says Independent man's show was "was tied for 18th place with the suburban music station WXLO-FM during winter months." Is Glenn Beck warming up in the wings?

btw Jay Severin has used the term "nancy boys" in the past (maybe he means sissies, not gay). Also Jay
refuses to use the term gay as slang, so he refers to a certain subject as "homosexual marriage", feeling
"gay" is an adjective for happy (note old song lyrics, even popping up in Christmas tunes; don we now
our gay apparel, Make the Yuletide gay, etc....)"Where the people are so gay, twistin' the night away)

by the way, some groups are trying to de-fang derogatory terms by actually USING them. Many dwarves
don't like the term midget, yet some short statured wrestlers proudly use the term Midget Wrestling.
There are groups like Queer Nation...a rap group called itself NWA, N------ With Attitude, and some
black people use the "N-word" as a term of endearment.

(JOKE) AMORELLO TAKES WRKO JOB

Boston--First there was Marjorie Clapprood, then Ray Flynn, and Peter Blute. Now outgoing Mass.
Turnpike Director Matthew J. Amorello has been hired by WRKO to fill its weekday 9 am-to-noon slot,
in yet another case of politics-to-talk-show-host. Former Providence mayor Vincent "Buddy" Cianci
will be co-host. John DePetro has been sent down to the farm team in Pawtucket--er, Providence.

(above is parody of course...I need to use the disclaimer, just like when Jerry had someone on
imitating Dukakis. 'That was not really the governor, of course'...)

---By the way, a post from the conservative Free Republic board, when someone compared it to
the controversy over Ward Churchill's free speech: "Nonsense. The guy violated company policy and was suspended by his boss. You seem to have forgotten two important things. First, the 1st amendment prevents the GOVERNMENT from making a law to suppress free speech. And, second, actions have consequences. He acted against the radio stations policies, and the station was well within their rights to suspend him. I commend them."

By the way, while Wolfe did suspend DePetro for his language, note the following line from a Dan Kennedy
Media Nation blog: ""Wolfe helped turn WEEI into a huge success by encouraging a crude, locker-room approach that often veers into homophobia. " (Kennedy's opinion) Whether Wolfe encouraged such on-air talk or just looked
the other way is a matter of debate, and it should be noted that Wolfe did react strongly to other
controversies like the D&C Metco joke.

Depetro said F A G ? Well I don't condone it, but it's nothing that Archie Bunker hasn't said....... and that was 30 years Ago! WJAR TV Providence reported that Depetro called him a Sissy Boy. I found it kind of funny that WJAR didn't have a problem saying that. So did WJAR substitute Sissy Boy in place of F A G (or) did Depetro say both? Oh well...... still don't know why it's not a big deal for Stern to call people F A G S but people freak out when Depetro says it. ???

This is clearly a publicity stunt that Jason Wolfe probably helped plan. Everyone is talking about it, it's on the news, and now some curious people will tune in when he's back on. Huge numbers of the gay "community" lol, will probably tune in just waiting for him to make another remark and they can all dial in to snap their fingers and shake those hips.

I don't see this being a publicity stunt. It puts dollars at risk thru potential economic boycott.

with all due respect, that reveals a bit of latent homophobia right there... in fact, it ain't latent...

Well, from personal interaction with Kahn and Wolfe...actually to be correct, interaction with Wolfe and non repciprocal action from Kahn (she did not reply to either of the 2 emails I sent her) Nothing more serious will be done. Apparently they (Entercom) approves of the homophobic attitude on air but slap the on air personalities on the wrist when it becomes too public.

A problem arose last year, and as I said I emailed both Wolfe and Kahn about it. I wrote in the email that something was said and supplied the date and time that it was done. Wolfe said "I did't hear it" (I still have the email) and never heard another word from him. Kahn didn't even respond.

No wonder they flipped Star 93.7. It was a great station that was popular among gay people and straight people who liked that music. But it didn't fit their republican homophobic ideals.

It's sad that AMORELLO and his corruption had a hand in killing a woman and the best that RKO can come up with is to call him 'fat' and 'gay'. Howie Carr is such a one trick pony he had to bring the fact that Kennedy also killed a woman into his rant. My god, when is he going to move on to something timely like Whitey Bulger... Oh wait, that's been done to death too. Maybe he can get a good Nixon impersonator like Imus uses, or have Steve Sweeney on to pretend to be Kevin White, that's always a hoot.

Raccoon, you are right about people using terms to drain the negativity from them. The problem with the N word and the F word is that both terms were used for the killings of blacks and gays, respectively.

N word could result in lynching. F word could result in a gay man or woman being thrown on the fire to burn
witches. Here's someone who disagrees with that understanding of the term:

http://balabustabluejeans.blogspot.com/2006_04_01_balabustabluejeans_archive.html

You are right when you say Ray Davies mentions the term in "Well Respected Man" - he likes his fags the best -
and you know Ray is the king of double entendre so he slipped it through as a term for cigarettes while simultaneously saying the conservative "well respected man" actually liked guys "the best". See Wikipedia for some public domain information on it:

"While his lyrics were often deceptively simple, focused on time-honored rock themes such as love, sexual attraction and partying, they often contained elements of satire, examples including "A Well-Respected Man", which ridiculed conservative suburban values, and "Dandy", which mocked the superficiality of the Mod lifestyle". And don't forget Lola "I know what I am and in bed I'm a man and so's Lola" or "I know what I am and I bet I'm a man and so's Lola" (depending on how the "mondegreen" or mis-heard lyric is used or thought to be said)

But Ray Davies said it with affection, Archie Bunker said it to make a point, and John Depetro used it in a hateful way to get ratings for the homophobic WRKO. There's no way he said it without permission.

What Mike Savage said was far worse (albeit on another station, a TV station) but he's still on the air.
There's no way Jason Wolfe is going to pull Depetro off his sinking ship known as "the independent man" -
they stuck with Jeff Katz for far too long - and it is the only way Depetro gets any attention.

What WRKO is forgetting is that they are advertising a personality that has none. So any people tuning IN to hear Depetro are going to tune back out. Notice how none of us heard John Depetro say it - we only read it in the newspaper. When WRKO jocks write on this board that we must be listening because we are talking about them it shows how incredibly thin skinned, vain and out of touch they are.

Let's boycott their advertisers. It was inappropriate. Try getting some listeners with TALENT instead of
Slurs - John Depetro. Maybe you'll move up to 17th place...by the year 2011...

Where I come from (Southie) there's huge difference between calling someone a "***" and calling them a "******".

One has no correlation whatsoever to sexuality. While the other is absolutely referencing someone who is gay.

I have used the term "***" on the air. It's already expected by the audience. I've set them up to understand my personality, and they get that when I say I'm a "dog ***", it means I have empathy and love for dogs. When I "*** out", it means I'm scared to do something, or I showed a form of hero worship to a famous person. It also doesn't hurt that I won't use the term until after it's obvious that I am not homophobic at all.

It's interesting that DePetro chose this particular term. I think the real issue is that it's so out-of-character for him. It's not a word that would normally come out in his speech. And then he chose to try to justify/qualify it. Had he just said the guy's a *** for not owning up to his responsibility, I think it would've been quickly dismissed.

I can't say for sure I would've used that term to descibe the situation. But I do know that audience expectations for WRKO are different from the rock arena, and that perhaps Depetro was trying to "skew hip."

This isn't the first, nor is it the most offensive utterance in his career there. I recall the day Darrell Abbott was killed in Columbus, he was advocating shooting more people who were fans of the man's music. I found that to be much more offensive than this.

In order to achieve true equality, we as a society must be prepared to accept equal opportunity slurs. They will never go away. And the more attention they are given, the longer their power exists. There was a time when "hell" and "damn" were forbidden. And I remember the first time I heard "pissed off" on the air and said hmmm a door has been opened.

The occasional use of a term like *** can achieve an inoffensive, entertaining effect if placed correctly in context. Rational thinking people won't take offense to it. Unfortunately, we're living in an overractive broadcast industry that finds "***" offensive, but has no problem with a morning show who would feature two people physically fighting on the air. Mr. Depetro apparently chose the wrong phrase in the wrong context.

At least he has a few days off to enjoy the humidity.

>>I know what I am and in bed I'm a man and so's Lola

Hmm! I always thought what he sang was "I'm glad I'm a man and so is Lola".

On a live album, Ray can be heard talking to the audience before a song:
"Well, it sure is nice to be back here in Phila-a-del-phi-a!" (Crowd cheers). A policeman walked up
to me and said (effeminate voice), excuse me, are you Ray Davies! (cheer) I said, yeah, what's your name?
(Policeman) L-O-L-A, Lola..." And in another live concert bit, Davies mentions the line about "and he likes
his f--- the best" (laughter from crowd)--he goes on to mention that he means cigarettes..

Ray Davies related: I have fond memories of a "Storyteller" show he did at the Music Hall in Portsmouth, NH.
About 3 hours long--songs and stories. Before the show, a friend of mine and yours truly dined at the Press
Room nearby and we were told Ray had eaten there earlier. Oh well.

btw No apology, etc., on WRKO site, though I'm guessing they covered it in a press release to the papers.
IIRC there was an apology posted during the Metco/D&C controversy and I believe WRKO ran some public
service announcements for Metco to try and smooth things out.
