How asleep-at-the-wheel can WHJJ be?

I thought it was really strange that they picked Depetro as the person to comment on right from wrong.
I chuckled aloud last night when I saw that NBC10's local angle on the story was Johnny D.
APPLAUSE, APPLAUSE, APPLAUSE to him, for stealing the spotlight from affiliate WHJJ.
Clearly, John's story was a keen way for WJAR to localize the Imus spectacle...one-of-our-own who's-experienced-something-akin-to-what-Iman-is-experiencing.
But can you imagine as dominant/respected a news organization as WJAR covering this compelling story with NO mention of the local Imus station?
And why SHOULD they? If the affiliate had a dang pulse, they'd be out-in-front-of-this blockbuster...and playing it like a Stradivarius.
I had to jump on an airplane this morning, so I haven't heard WHJJ today.
(Good afternoon from Fargo ND, where, yes, it IS snowing; and where -- like WHJJ -- client WDAY is a Sean Hannity affiliate. So at least SOMEONE on WHJJ is giving the Imus story the energy it deserves.)
A reporter, from a newspaper in Cleveland, called me this morning as I was connecting at Detroit airport. He asked me "What you you advise an Imus affiliate?" I told him "the only WRONG approach a station could take is business-as-usual."
What I heard on WHJJ yesterday was all-too "business-as-usual."
One approach might be for an affiliate's station manager to go on-air, high-profile, two days ago, and say "Lookit. Just because the network has no conscience doesn't mean we don't. If they won't fire him, we will!" And cancel or suspend the show.
Another school-of-thought would be to play the forgiveness angle. Make a clear statement that the station finds what-Iman-said deplorable; but acknowledge his apology...and open-up-the-phone-lines.
A REALLY smart affiliate would ask LISTENERS to decide. "YOU tell US! Should he stay? Or should he go?"
Again, I'm out-of-the-loop there today.
Did WHJJ do any-of-the-above?
Another reporter, from New York Newsday, interviewed me yesterday, and agreed with my recollection that it was, in fact, P.T. Barnum who said "Say what you will about me, just spell my name right" (
http://www.newsday.com/entertainment/ny-etimus0410,0,2299536.story?coll=ny-hockey-headlines). This SHOULD be a buzz bonanza for WHJJ.
Prediction: Imus won't survive long-term.
Those calling for his head are TOO miffed.
"Too little too late" as Sharpton said on The Today Show.
(Where Imus misspoke and called him "Reverend Hargis.")
The big winner so far in this whole fiasco: Al Sharpton.
