This story is also fading quicker than Dick Cheney's approval ratings, but it is worthy of looking at so here goes.
John DePetro's signature campaign is up to 518 questionable names with no evidence they are real people.
I can tell you for certain I haven't posted at all, but someone is using one of my handles:
311. The Mad Faxer This is totally unfair! Now who am I gonna pick on!
Brilliant! How DiPietro and his attorney think this "campaign" is going to achieve anything is the real question. Would you want to hire Pete Bellotti if they fail to get a decent "settlement package" from
WRKO after seeing this fiasco?

"Peter Bellotti..the defender of the faith and leading the charge for freedom."
DePetro doesn't get it. No one cares. It's kind of like Paul Marshall getting axed from WAAF and many people in the community oblivious to the fact he was even on during drivetime. AAF has a niche audience, but Marshall didn't resonate with the hundreds of thousands of people in Worcester County. How are
Mistress Carrie's ratings compared to Marshall's? Going to Iraq did not hurt her in the promotional dept.
DePetro should've gone to Iraq and reported from there. His petition makes Mike Dukakis in the tank look like a stroke of genius by comparison.
That many of these egotistical personalities spend their time attacking us - the people who like to talk about radio - is truly telling. Most of the "regulars" on this board have been involved with radio - at least as fans, for decades. We like to chat about it. Those who had the power to shut us off if we call in can't believe we won't support them when they get the boot. Their egos are totally off the map.
They'll do the slash and burn thing on this poster, as usual, which will only prove my point. We're here to talk about radio, their job is to be ON the radio. Yelling at the messenger instead of accepting some good advice is the problem with the DePetro/Paul Marshall types. Marshall couldn't connect with two audiences on two major stations in a 2 year period. In radio life he was invisible to the Boston market.
DEPETRO'S PETITION:
This alleged petition only reaffirms that WRKO's decision was correct. The people have spoken. If anything the "petition" will keep potential employers away. Look at the "names" and the ridicule here:
370. Haywood Jablowme Would ya?
Names like "John Kennedy", "HC" (Howie Carr), "John DiPietro", and the biggest supporter "Line Voided".
If anything negative is written, it is rejected. The Line Voideds stay as alleged "votes". but here's the real evidence of stupidity: compare DePetro's campaign to the WBCN strike.
When WBCN went on "strike" it had huge community support. Oedipus certainly rode on the coattails of The Big Mattress and Tommy Hadges and all the pioneers that did the heavy lifting, but at least Oedi picked a winner. DePetro has picked a loser and that loser is himself.
When Trevor Gowdy received the Boston mail from WCGY's Boston P.O. Box he was stunned by the thousands of postcards and letters we got in support of Boston Music Showcase the first month. And it kept building.
We promoted the heck out of the show. Real people calling in from gas station's by the side of the road to request songs like RTZ's "Dreams", stuff you couldn't hear anywhere else struck a chord with the community on a 50,000 watt station starting at 6 PM on a Sunday night. DePetro's mistake mirrors Kerry Healey's major flaw (and how ironic they both shared DePetro's final days on WRKO together; that it was the campaign that deep sixed them both). Healey had an amazing platform for 4 years, but she was aloof and holier than thou. Deval Patrick pressed the flesh. She didn't.
At WCGY we reactivated a station that was dormant. The strategy was simple, Harvey Wharfield had huge
ratings at WZLX and I understood that we had to capitalize on that quickly to alert his huge following that he moved. God knows WZLX wasn't going to advertise their star player had moved to another signal. I put together a playlist for every single BOSTON MUSIC SHOWCASE program that I was involved with, Harvey or his wife typed them up, and we got them out onto dozens of mailing lists with hundreds and hundreds of names and addresses. Sponsor mailing lists, our Fall Music Conference mailing lists AND - as an added bonus - the bands began mailing the playlists out along with putting them in their press kits. It was amazing. But we were surprised when they started tuning in and voting for their favorite songs by postcard. I still have stacks of the material in 3 ring binders, it was a huge phenomenon, and we were very careful to weed out the "similar names" or similar handwriting. We had no internet to speak of in 1991, just old fashioned playlists and postcards.
Wharfield had his legacy of WKOX, WAAF, WZLX and his Arbitrons, 1, 2, and 3 consistently in Drive time (switching with Dale Dorman at KISS and Parenteau at WBCN, the three hosts were the Top 3 in Boston for certain demographics and maybe 12+) Promoting a popular host who had moved was hard work, but to General Manager Trevor Gowdy and Program Director Steve Becker is due. They gave us a lot of latitude (and tons of xerox paper and postage) to get the word out. But we did the hard work that DePetro is not doing.
We pressed the flesh. We were putting flyers in nightclubs, music stores. It was good old fashioned radio promo and it worked.

If anything, the DePetro.com site is prima facie evidence that Jason Wolfe had no alternative but to fire
DePetro...for poor performance.
518 Total Signatures - many of them fake of "line removed" but the number stays the same, almost 2 weeks after the election and a paltry number of people.
If the population of Boston is Population: 600,000

do the math. For DePetro to have a shot he would've had to have had 20,000 signatures - real signatures - in a two week period.
with WRKO reaching millions, potentially, up the East Coast, down to the Cape, the 518 signatures, carrying tons of fakes, is a total embarrassment.
DePetro is best advised to take the finest moments from his show, aircheck 'em, and go to another part of the U.S.A. As far as Boston goes, stick a fork in him, it's all over.
