Des Moines Metro now has 2 Spanish Stations

What used to be on 1700 has moved to 105.5 out of Perry and 1700 is now programmed by Citadel with their own Spanish programming. Can they both survive?

Not to mention, the soon to be new owner of 1490, Davidson Media,is a "multicultural broadcaster"

There was an article in this mornings Register about the change, however, there isn't a link on their website.

blurb from northpine.com about the sale of 1490:

Davidson Media is buying KXLQ/1490 (Indianola), which has been off the air since January 31, from Warren Broadcasting for $425,000. The 1kW station delivers a fair to good signal to Des Moines. A previous agreement to sell the station to KXLQ Insight Sports, LLC, was not completed. Davidson Media, a multicultural broadcaster, is also in the process of buying two stations in the Minneapolis market. (7/15/2005)

I wouldn't think so, but Des Moines has one or two more religious stations than you'd think would survive, so who knows. Of course, there is a large Latino population in Perry, so they have more than just Des Moines businesses to sell to.

Is 105.5 all Spanish? I assume whatever they were running is just on the AM in Perry?

Read "time brokered" so they could sell time to preachers, Asian language broadcasters, somebody who wants to have their own talk show, etc.

It's very possible, but who knows.

I find it amazing when people question stuff like this w/o really realizing how much DSM is changing. In about 5-10 years, you're going to see a whole new generation/culture starting to run this town.

Just like the Rythmic CHR argument. Sooner or later it'll happen. It's just a matter of when. ;)

It should be of know suprise whatsoever. The integration of Spanish radio and television began years ago in the bigger markets (L.A., New York, Miami) Historically, it always seems to trickle down to most of the other larger markets (DM). Perhaps for future employment, I may need to referance my notes from H.S. Spanish class. Its all good!

has anyone noticed KLDS is mixing both formats. Their old one (its really faint in the background) and the spanish?

I noticed friday night they had a football game on, and then went back to spanish. I wonder if there is some shared time type deal.

I noticed the background noise this morning too. Sounds like there are still technical bugs to be worked out.

Correction: DSM still has 1 Spanish station

...and Perry has 1.

Re: Correction: DSM still has 1 Spanish station

Actually, with the growth of the city and KDLS's stick, it covers a fair share of DSM.

Maybe the SE side can't quite listen, but you get the idea.

No, it covers a portion of the metro area. Not a "fair" share.
Therefore, it is a Perry station. Not a DSM station.

Basically, you can get it in your car in Urbandale, Johnston, Windsor Heights, etc. Not exactly hot spots for the hispanic population.

Re: Correction: DSM still has 1 Spanish station

I can trip it on 'seek' in some areas of DSM proper, which means it'a a t least a 'good' signal in SOME areas.

Re: Correction: DSM still has 1 Spanish station

Either way...they will be a DSM station as soon as they can get KELR/105.3 Chariton moved east. At that point their signal will reach as a city grade over to Pleasant Hill and northern Warren Co.

Also, if you count pirate 92.9 from somewhere on the east side there will be 3 hispanic stations at that point.
