Destin/FWB CHR's

I was in the Destin/FWB area on vacation this week. My first time back since I moved away in 1990, Destin has really grown since then. I brought my 21 year old son with me, so he tended to dominate the radio. He was going back and forth between Z-96.5, Mix 103.1, I-100, Island 106, and on the last day he discovered Fly 92.1. I noticed that he seemed to spend most of his time with either Mix 103.1 or Island 106. Musically, I liked Mix 103.1, although I'm way outside their target demos. I thought Island 106 sounded the most polished. Z-96.5 was descent and I-100 sounded automated. I don't know why they didn't go with Q-100, since they still have the WJLQ calls. My son likes Rap music, especially Lil' Wayne, and he said that Fly 92.1 played some music that he didn't recognize. I thought he would like their format, but he didn't care much for them. I didn't find a station that I really liked, but settled for WWAV 102.1 most of the time.

Fly 921 is a serviceable rhythmic. They have the advantage of being the only rhythmic with a city grade signal in the Fort Walton area. Z96 is terrible in my opinion and Mix 103 has improved but the music is just not my cup of tea. WWAV plays way more 80's than I ever remember them doing and it seems to be paying off in the ratings. Island 106 has always been solid although wpfm is sounding really good these days. I usually listen to Fly or PFM (Hot 107.9) and sometimes coast 933 if I want to get my 80's fix.

When I was in the Destin area last spring, Island 106 mopped the floor with the other local CHRs. Presentation, music, mornings/jocks... all far better than Market #240 quality. i100 was slightly generic but decent, especially for a Cumulus CHR. What a flamethrowing signal, too...perfect building penetration even in Destin proper. WABB's signal wasn't quite as strong, but from what I heard they seemed a bit more interesting and distinctive than i100.

Z96 was atrocious and among the worst CHRs I had heard in quite some time - a perfect embodiment of the stereotypical Cumulus "Top 40." Don't know about the jocks, but the imaging was weak, the music was appalling and from the looks of their logs, it hasn't improved since my visit.

Mix 103.1 is a great station. I like their format. I wish Q100 would come back (sigh)

Don't you guys think were in CHR overload though?

I wouldn't say Mix 103 is a great station. I would say it's your average Hot ac station as opposed of being one of the worst which it was a year ago. That's the thing with Qantum stations. They seem to be solid but nothing special. I forgot to mention the P'cola Mobile stations. I think I100 is okay, but if they ever want to beat WABB they have to be better than that. That means a good morning show and afternoon drive and maybe a mix show or two. The same thing goes with The Groove. Rob I don't think that there are too many chr. I think competition makes for better radio. Besides you still have plenty of hot/ac,country even smooth jazz!
