Detroit Arbitron Ratings: Holiday 2012

http://ratings.****************/cgi-bin/rol.exe/arb011

These are the publicly released overall age 6+ rankings for the Holiday 2012 survey period covering Thu. 12/6/12-Wed. 1/2/13.
The next survey period will be January 2013 covering Thu. 1/3/13-Wed. 1/30/13 with the data release date being Tue. 2/19/13.

Where do I start? 97.1 The Ticket is out of the top ten for the first time in a long time. They are 11th behind the two Hip-Hop stations. Not a good time for Doug to dip so low with Cumulus going Country in New York. 89x is plummeting in the ratings. Shame because I think they are doing what they can. I have to eat some words because I thought 107.5 hadn't gained ground on 'JLB because they hadn't reported in a while. It's WJLB 4.3, Hot 107.5 4.2. Also, keep an eye on AMP, and 106.7 The D. Both stations are dangerously low in the ratings. Those stations are owned by companies that probably won't take too kindly to 2.4's and 2.1's.

Also, Talk Radio 1270's final book was an 0.7, and 1310 finished at an 0.3, actually beating WDFN. CBS Sports Radio's job is to keep some of that audience, and at least pull a 0.3 or better in my opinion.

Regarding 1270, I agree with that assessment, but believe the format was flipped more to ensure the national ads had clearance in all major markets, or as many as possible.

With the return of the NHL, The Ticket will be back near the top soon.

That is very true.

On the 1270 comment. Its kind of why Salem has gone out of their way to buy second stations in their markets. They clear their poor attempt at talk radio on these stations for the national buys...

Don't read too much into the Holiday ratings for non-Holiday stations, as the huge ratings increase for stations for stations such as Fresh and whatever 105.1 calls itself this week tends to depress the numbers for everyone else. Yes, even 89x listeners have been caught jamming to Fresh this time of year. So I'd take these ratings for Amp, D, and X with a grain of salt unless they don't improve in the January books.

AMP Radio and The D 106.7 are flopping so hard!

Impressive that WDVD lost NOTHING even though Fresh and 105.1 were so strong.

You think it's possible for AMP to try a different approach to their format? Maybe try a Dance-leaning Rhythmic Top 40 approach to gain listeners? Because, if you listen to their mixes that they do, it's all some form of EDM (especially when they spin at clubs).

So maybe instead of leaning Mainstream, try mixing some Dance product along with the Hip-Hop and Pop music they're already spinning....

While I hardly think that Salem's talk should be described as a "poor attempt at talk radio", jry's comment does bolster the rationale for the CBS Sports Network and should make clear that 1270 won't be flipping to anything else anytime soon.

Jry nailed this one. If CBS gets more national ads for 1270, that's their goal. If they can drum up some value-added buys for 97.1 (buy x number of ads on 97, here are some freebies on 1270), even better. Should they achieve both and bring in some of their own business, even better. Plus it won't cost much to run, so this is a great idea whether it gets a 0.1 or a 5 share.
