All access says Clear Channel AC WNIC is now throwin' it down, All Christmas

So, per last year spirited posts, which buffalo station will drop it for All Holiday first? I think Mike Ran got Nov 18th for last year.

How is it that I accurately called WJYE's move to Christmas music last year but I can't get ONE stinkin' number on my Take Five card! BTW, I'm still waiting for those Sattler's and Freddie's Doughnuts gift certificates, Mr. O'Connell!

Truth be told, I calculated the day WJYE would switch based on the Fall Arbitron and some help from a guy I know who's still in the business. We both miscalculated on our initial dates. (He posts on this board on rare occasion, but I'll be damned if I'm gonna blow his cover.)

Anyway, I was early, he was late. I split the difference and BINGO! Whodathunkit. He never posted a date because, being in the business, he thought people here might suspect he works at Infinity. I'll leave it to you to ponder whether or not he does.

This year, I'm calling WJYE first, again. November 21st. BUT, it wouldn't surprise me if WJYE goes Thursday, 11/17, the beginning of an Arbitron Diary Week.

So put me down for Thursday, November 17th. Final answer.

Also, WJYE beats Star. And it wouldn't surprise me if Star doesn't go Christmas until late. I think Star's on the fence. They face a "pick your poison" situation: Take on WJYE with Christmas music or stay the course and fend off Jack with normal programming.

If WJYE and Star go Christmas, Jack and WHTT get a shot at some of the AC listeners who aren't fond of Christmas music and the office managers who can't stand it on their office radio.

Wouldn't that give WHTT an opportunity to put more 80's stuff into the mix and p*ss-off both Star and WJYE. Now that I think of it, this could be a propitious point in WHTT's evolution.</font>

ooooo sorry Mike, I think the certificates expired....around 1977...but thank you for playing! (tee hee).

As a consolation gift, I'm gonna build you a signature bridge...well, I'm not actually going to build it...I'm going to PROMISE to build it and then let one of the control boards take the blame for the delay in construction...or maybe the Canadians....look, I'm going to blame somebody because I'm a Buffaloian...I finger point and get nothing done, its what we do! ;)<P ID="signature">______________

I hereby post my annual rant that I think it's so stupid that these stations are playing Christmas music now, but will stop doing so on December 26th. The last thing I want to hear now is holiday music. And I have to imagine that so is the listening public. Temperatures this weekend are in the 60s. We're outside raking leaves. I still feel more of a connection to the summer than winter. But on December 26th, when I'm heading to yet another holiday party, and want to hear such music, it can't be found on the radio. I know the only reason these stations are doing this is to appease advertisers. Playing Christmas music now with ads for the holidays will draw customers. And on December 26th, that need ceases. But it's stupid. It's wrong. It doesn't serve the listener, only the advertiser, which I why this industry is in the bad shape it is. And I hate it. And that's my annual rant. Join me next year at this time for another!

I agree. Retail advertisers provide much, if not most, of the advertising revenue for music-formatted stations (except those commercial stations that program classical music). It subconciously urges listeners to "Get Your Christmas Shopping Done!".

Add Classical to the list...?

SOME classical stations jump on the Christmas banwagon by playing slow instrumental Christmas tunes, but usually not until the week before Christmas.

So Mike, what you're saying is, "Every once in a while, the blind squirrel finds a nut."

And not 24/7 all-Christmas.

The only time I can recall a commercial classical-music station trying all-Christmas was a couple of years ago, when Washington's WGMS tried a classical-music version of an all-Christmas format. They haven't done it since.
