I was just there, and they have another CHR on 102.7, Also, Why is Channel 95.5s signal have so much static driving throught Detroit? They have 100,000 watts at 492 feet in the air, Could it be because of all the Tall Bulidings, and structures in General. The old DRQ on 93.1 had a strong signal in the city, and they only have 26,000 watts, but they are almost at 700 feet in the air. Also, over in Windsor and past in Canada, Channel 955s signal is weak, and breaks up alot, but Defunct DRQ 93.1 comes in good in Canada, with less power.

According to Radio-Locator, yes. WHTD is listed as Top-40. Anyone know what they sound like or when they shifted from urban?

Hmm... I live 90 miles from Detroit and I haven't heard a thing about it. Unfortunately, I can't pick up WHTD (local WBZV, one horrid waste of an FM allotment, kinda gets in the way), so while I'd love to check it out, it's not really a possibility.

I think 955's signal is weak thanks to all the energy they're putting into their HD subchannel. I used to be able to pick them up all the time until they fired that thing up... now I have to wait for a decent tropo opening.<P ID="signature">______________

Their still a Rhythmic CHR, with a few pop tracks, similar to Channel 95.5.

Yes, they'e borderline Ryhtmic CHR, but far from Top 40. Channel plays pop tracks mixed in with the crossover product. WHTD does not. Here's their spins from R & R this past week:

WHTD, WKQI, etc.

WKQI's tower is actually 433 feet above ground level and some of the high rise buildings surrounding the tower are taller!

WDRQ (now known as Doug FM) only has 26,000 watts, but their tower...which is practially right next door to WKQI's...is much taller.

WKQI's reception troubles stem from a few things.

For starters, their audio levels are very crunk. WKQI has always had pretty loud audio as compared to the other Detroit stations, but I think Dom Theodore turned up the levels even more when he started there as PD. High end treble crackles and low end bass sounds distorted on some receivers during certain songs because of this.

Second, as previously mentioned, their tower isn't very tall. If you are in downtown Detroit, for example, there will be spots where you'll hissing, static, etc. That's actually pretty common for all stations whose towers are in Southfield. Some stations have their towers in the heart of Detroit, too, and will interfere with their suburban counterparts. 93.1 WDRQ gets interference from 92.3 WMXD, 101 WRIF get interference from 101.9 WDET, 105.9 WDMK gets inteference from 106.7 WDTW, etc.

Finally, some Cleveland stations share dial positions with Detroit stations. If you are in SW Ontario along the northern shore of Lake Erie in particular, there are places where you'll hear 2 stations duking it out with one another, and neither will be very listenable.

Getting back to Hot 102.7 WHTD, Radio-Locator's listing is wrong. If you actually listened to the station, there's no way it could be mistaken for a CHR. The music and especially the jocks are very "Urban" sounding. Most of the air talent sound as if they came straight out of the ghetto. The station definitely caters to an inner-city African American audience.

If anything, WJLB has more crossover appeal than WHTD.

The earlier description of WKQI was right on the mark. They lean very Rhythmic, but most of the stuff they play has a tremendous amount of crossover appeal. They will play a rock track here & there, too, if it blows up on the charts

DRQ, during the last 2 years or so of its life as a CHR, was clearly more vanilla / conservative than WKQI.
