Detroit Radio Ratings-April 2012

The biggest surprise in this book, for me at least, was that WNIC dropped below 1M cume and saw their AQH crater. WMGC is doing well. WXYT (FM) won big, not unexpected with the Tigers on now.

Young Country was a strong #2. That format is ripe for the picking by 98.7 (which had a terrible month) or 106.7 if they execute properly this time.

WXYT (AM) saw a cume of over 200k and is approaching a 1.0 AQH (0.8 for this book). Maybe the talk format is gaining traction there.

Yeah, this has been a disaster for CC and you've gotta wonder how long before 100.3 goes country or even back to mainstream AC. Otherwise, no real surprises in this book.

WMGC- Soft Rock 105.1 is just Awesome!!! Plain. and. Simple.

When it comes to doing what it takes to making a format work, CBS Radio does it right. 1270 on a less than stellar signal is heading towards a 1.0 share, and they are turning up the marketing. 100.3 needs to figure out what they are doing, because that's not good. 106.7 to me has become a lot of Classic Rock tracks that 'CSX has always played and less of the next gen rock that got them to a 3.3 share. That needs to change. 97.1 going to #1 in April with the Wings playoff run(all 5 games of it)and the added Tigers excitement helped that.

Oh, WDVD during mornings (I forgot to add that). They have one of the, if not the best morning show in the midwest.

It looks like many DETROIT radio stations are losing listeners. Maybe many metro Detroiter's listen to their ipods or satellite radio or internet radio on their smartphones for music now, which is leading to the death of local free radio.

Though it probably doesn't even show up on the ratings radar screen, when I'm in the area (I have family in south-western Ontario), I tune in to 90.9 WRCJ. It's Detroit's classiest act. :)

I wouldn't really say that the Wings had all to big of an effect on 97.1s ratings. The Tigers every year seem to have this effect on the station during summer months. Just think, they play probably an average of 25 games a month and many are likely returning listeners due to their schedules. But I guess the Wings could have had a small effect.

I threw the Wings in there because it is the playoffs, and that is when Hockey fans here really focus on the Wings(Stanley Cup or bust). Also, Wings games get first priority on 97.1 FM over Tigers games during the playoffs, so it couldn't be all Tigers.

I agree with your analysis. The Wings playoff run was so short this year that the impact was less than in years past, but not the result. The Ticket still rose to the top like a rocket.

Speaking of WRCJ, do they no longer subscribe? They've usually shown quite well in the PPM ratings in the past (better than WDET at least) and I find it hard to believe that they literally have fallen completely off the radar.

Glad to see Soft Rock 105.1 doing so well... they seem to be doing a nice job of filling the void WNIC left behind. I have noticed that they have introduced a few more current/recent songs into rotation, but thankfully no Gaga or Rihanna and limited Katy Perry.
