Detroit Radio Round-up Part 2

The title of my post is taken from a previous post, but I thought I would offer an opinion on a few stations in our area. Of course, if you disagree or would like to add something, don't hesitate to do so. The following stations are exempt from this post. 97.1, 99.5, 105.1, 96.3, 94.7, both of the Urban stations, WRIF, 104.3, and FM98WJLB. First off: 93.1 WDRQ. it would be nice to see them scale back on the Classic Rock with as many as five stations that in some way play that type of music, but with their format description, that won't happen, but it seems to me that they have played a lot of Classic Rock once 106.7 switched. Next, 95.5 WKQI. I wish they could come up with something extra to blow past 96.3 and bury AMP. 96.3 is down to a 4.0 share, so it's not impossible. The music variety is good. they took Jag off of nights. It just seems like there is something they could do. We shall see. To be honest, I could care less if AMP stays or not, but in the interest of fairness, they have to do something with their music direction, where you aren't hearing songs four times in less than three hours. Also, stop saying you are #1 for all the hits. Most people know you aren't. cut some new sweepers or outros. Also, pick what station you are competing with, and go from there. trying to be 96.3 with rap just doesn't work. just ask your competiton. 95.5 in late 2010 and early 2011 tried the same thing and had a 3.0. Next, Fresh 100.3. I think this station's ratings drop has been due to the fact that they are trying to beat 105.1 and try to take something out of 96.3 to help 95.5, but something seems off there, and I honestly believe-this is exclusively my opinion- that the next five months will tell the tale of where this station ends up, and if the struggles continue, maybe they flip after Christmas. And then there was 106.7 WDTW-FM. Although it hurt a little to see the Beat go, this station actually held my interest, and has continued to. Problem is, although they play music 94.7 doesn't play and 101.1 could but doesn't, but they are also playing stuff that both 'CSX and 'RIF play a lot. They are slightly getting away from songs that they played that made them sound new and different, and some of the songs that they do play that's next gen, that seems to be what they play mostly. Someway, somehow, get back to the stuff that got you to a 3.3 share, while slowly bringing music in that 94.7 or 101.1 doesn't feel that they need to play.

I could not agree more about Doug. I hear classic rock almost every time I turn it on. Why listen to Doug when I can hear the same stuff (plus DJs) on 94.7? It seems the Clear Channel "Jack" formats- such as WHLK/Cleveland do a pretty good job of mixing in older Top 40 with the classic rock.

First of all, you're right about Doug FM. They play way too much in the way of 70s music. They're supposed to play "everything" and all I ever hear is 60s/70s music (and sometimes 80s music). And maybe if WKQI stopped being so rhythmic, they might do better. And maybe 100.3 could go back to AC, though it may be too late for that.
