The US Canada Agreement was changed decades ago so that only the 0.5 mV/m 50% Skywave Contour was required to be protected, not any point on the border or in the other country. Did the US and Mexico never Agree to the same condition (for XEROK and the other Class I/Class As)? I remember that there were problems because of NAFTA disagreements that should have not been considered from a professional standpoint, but they stood firm. My understanding is that the old skywave model is used in both Agreements, resulting in a larger 0.5 mV/m 50% skywave area. I think this map uses the newer model, so it may cover all of Mexico under the older model. Otherwise, wouldn't they be able to interfere in and near the Yucatan Peninsula? Zoom Out to see the skywave contour, since it's so large you cant see it without doing that, due to the 150 kW power that is protected.

To my knowledge, Mexico never agreed to power more than 500 watts Night on Mexico Clear Channels. There had been plans to increase that to 1000 watts Night.

What time did you hear KGNO? I do overnights there 11pm to 5am 7 days a week

I lived in wyoming and only heard KGNO once..... i have to assume they behave, if they werent, theyd be mroe widely reported

I heard KGNO for the first time ever this past Wednesday night at 10:37 p.m. CT. It also seemed to me like they were running more than 5 kW at the time, but the signal eventually faded, so it was probably just really good propagation happening. It was gone shortly after 11 p.m., so I didn't get to hear you. I caught KGNO again around 7:15 a.m. this morning, but the signal was pretty weak.

Does the station play classic country only at night? I can't find a working website for KGNO, and today I'm only hearing talk programs on the webstream.

www.swksradio.com

the classic country is nights and weekends.. and theres a stream along with a semi program schedule on the website

Thanks. For some reason that web address comes up with a blank page on all my devices - both on different WiFi networks and on cellular. Strange.
I'm getting the same blank screen from that website.

Austin region.
The AM reception, day and night, is a lot better here, in central Texas north of Austin, than in Florida, where the AM band seemed to be one static mess, even on my Grundig Yacht Boy.
There still is a lot of static, especially during the day, but reception is better. In Fla., it seems the AM stations are restricted in power.
Nighttime reception brings in some good signals here vs. the 2-3 I could get in Tampa: WBT, Charlotte, WLW, Cincinnati, WSB, Atlanta. All those were sometimes.

CKLW has apparently been on day pattern at night a lot. They should not make DFW with the Mexican clear.
The Mexican "clear" is running well under its licensed power.

Having lived and DXed from FL in the past, I find this observation different than my experience. Perhaps it is your town or neighborhood and caused by local man-made interference and not static.

When the best AM licenses were handed out, Florida had much smaller cities and was not well developed. So the few somewhat decent stations were all highly directional to protect earlier licenses and they would shoot most of their night power over the ocean and to the south.

Even the "better" grants, such as 600 in Jax, 620 in Tampa, 580 in Orlando and 560 in Miami were all either lower power at night or directional away from the rest of the US. There are many other examples, but all are either reduced night power or highly directional or both.

A good example in the past is 1580 in Ft Lauderdale... a better night signal in San Juan than in Pompano.

Absolutely this. Use it or give it to someone who will.
800 is a Mexican clear channel. By treaty, the US can not use it even if it is not being fully used in Mexico. And Mexico legislated the move of over 600 AM stations to FM as they declared AM non-viable. But all the frequencies that Mexico had historical claim to are still protected, on or off the air.

Clear channel 1580 belongs to Mexico. But the Hermosillo, Sonora 50 kw non-directional station there is long gone to FM but the US can not make greater use of 1580 without a full new treaty!
Wow, what was going on with their power grid?
City grew, grid and generation capacity did not. In the case of XEROK, the transmitter is in an area that was rural when built, but now is a very poor neigborhood where most people make illegal electrical hookups, straining the grid and often shorting it out.

I've spent time in absolutely every corner or Florida. From Key West to where I am right now on the Gulf at the extreme western part of the Panhandle a few dozen yards from the Alabama state line. My 40-plus years experience here in both personal and business travel is that Florida is, on balance, an excellent place for DX. As for noise, also in my experience....which encompasses 49 states, coast to coast in Canada, and eight countries in Europe....is that you can and do run into local noise sources everywhere you go.. It's all just part of the game. :)
