DFW NonStop Coming to KXAS-DT 5.2

Because Weather subchannels don't make money.

I saw the crawl too. It may be decent local programming; I guess we'll just have to wait and see. I just hope the PQ doesn't go to crap a la This on 33.3.

As for the weather, the crawl says it'll still be available on KXAS's Web site. Big deal. There's plenty of weather available on the Internet. If I don't happen to be on my PC, I guess I'll just have to tune to 8.2, which I never liked all that much.

I guess you're not among the ever-growing number of people carrying smart phones. My wife and I joined the bandwagon last year joining our kids and just about everyone else I know. And TV stations have already started creating specific web sites optimized for the smart phone's small screen. You shall have local forecast and radar wherever you go.

As it happens, I do have a smart phone (a BlackBerry). What mobile Web site do you recommend for DFW-area and Texas/Oklahoma weather? (It doesn't need to be a TV station's site.)

Not quite as convenient as turning on the TV and punching 5.2, but it'll sure beat firing up the PC!

You've never heard of NOAA Weather Radio? The Sony SRF-M37W is only $30, much cheaper than a smart phone. You're lucky to have 2 weather stations to choose from, KEC55 and KEC56, 30 miles apart while I have to listen to a scratchy fringe signal of KGG68 that same distance (and direction) from Downtown Houston. (Also uses less power than a smartphone--1 AAA battery--and lasts for a few months.)

I don't know how so many people justify the high price of data-enabled plans. I'm paying $40/month for my 450 minutes, but to go to the cheapest plan available with a smart phone, I have to pay $70/month and get a bunch more minutes I won't use and unlimited texting I won't use.

I may wind up doing that in the future anyway to get a Mobile DTV enabled phone, but I won't be particularly pleased with the cost as it seems rather insane.

As a matter of fact, I have a Sony SRF-M37V! Great little AM/FM/WB radio (even receives the one analog TV station left in DFW - too bad it's owned by a Hispanic church ::) ). Perfect for emergencies too, since it's battery-operated.

But I prefer video to audio; video can convey information much more quickly. In fact I usually turn the sound off when checking 5.2 (except during severe weather).

I'm very lucky in this regard. My employer reimburses me the cost of a data-only plan (I paid for the phone and pay for any other services myself). But I completely agree that smart phones are still out of reach for many Americans. That's why it's nice to have weather available on free TV.

As a newbie to the smart phone I would have to agree with you. The features are nice to have but I barely use them. I bought the BB app for my Slingbox, but I don't use it that much. I wish there was an affordable low-use plan. But the low-use plans for the smart phones cost almost as much as the unlimited plan.

What is on the audio track for 5.2? KHOU 11.2 has the audio from 11.1 (sounds like a SAP) if the radar is on. Otherwise it's the audio track for that particular program, whether it be an infomercial, a newscast simulcast/encore presentation, or a show (such as Great Day Houston's encores during various times of the day).

NOAA Weather Radio: KEC-55 in Crowley/Fort Worth on 162.550 MHz.

It's funny, this morning Titan TV showed that this switch was going to take place tonight at midnight. Now it shows it won't happen until Saturday.

I suspect the weather situation prompted channel 5 to delay the start of this channel because they knew a bunch of people would be tuning in to watch the weather on 5.2. It's certainly possible something else delayed the launch. At the very least, it provides them another week of having people see the crawl at the top of the screen letting them know that DFW Nonstop is coming.

Odd follow up: they dropped the scroll on the screen days ago. I have no idea why. I also don't know why they are not promoting this channel on the main channel.

For what it's worth, Verizon Fios has the program schedule updated.

Probably because they got too many emails about NBC Plus going off. I went off on them via email a few weeks ago.

They may not have realized how popular the weather was until they put that crawl up and folks started complaining.
