DFW RADIO NEWSMAN SAM PATE GONE AT 77

Sam passed away this afternoon (Monday 8/3) of brain cancer and other ailments. He worked for KBOX, KLIF-1190 and KVIL in the 1960s in DFW, and was the first radio reporter to announce the shooting of President Kennedy on 11/22/1963. Services are 2PM Thursday in McKinney at Charles Smith Funeral Home.

Some of Sam's favorite radio experiences are online at www.radiodailynews.com/sampate.htm . Great stuff there about how radio news "used" to be done!

A few of us young-uns got to spend some time with Sam at the last couple of DFW Radio Lunch Bunch events. Sam was a great guy and will certainly be missed. I've posted a photo of Sam on knus99.com from our Feb 2009 lunch.

Mike, do you remember when 'BAP ran the audio of the Presidents shooting that day along with the entire station broadcast. Or at least what they had on tape? If so, was Sam the primary newscaster. I'm gonna have to give that another listen.

RIP Sam.
