I wouldn't assume that you're smarter than 'us' radio types (or at least me) just because you went to law school. I know some lawyers and half of them are idiots.
But to try and give you an answer...
I can't give you specifics because I'm at home and don't have access to it, but generally speaking Russ does really well among his target demo, men 18-34 and men 25-44. And some advertisers (like beer makers) crave those demos.
The general rankings you see are for "12 plus". That's everybody surveyed by Arbitron 12 years and older. He doesn't do near as well in those numbers because he doesn't appear to women as much, doesn't appeal to kids, old folks, some minorities, etc etc... (and when I say doesn't appeal, he may appeal to them, but not as much as other options)
In the 12+ ratings Kidd kicks Russ's (edit vulgarity)
But since they don't compete head on, and don't compete for the same demographics, it's hard to say who is doing better. Russ does well in his field (Men 18-44), Kidd does well in his (teens, young women, soccer moms)...
In The demo that is most highly coveted by advertisers (adults 25-54) russ is usually in the top 3, IIRC. Off the top of my head, I do believe it's a competition between him, Hannity on WBAP and the Hardline on KTCK. And who wins in any given month is just a factor of where the diaries land
(And that's how ratings work- Arbitron sends out diaries that are filled out by listeners. Each diary represents some proportion of the audience, i.e. one 12 year old girl might be representing 50K OTHER 12 year olds in the ratings- etc.Ratings are done on a monthly basis (called trends) with a quarterly report ("the book") every 3 months. )
So it's hard to say who is kicking who's butt- think of it this way- you might be a great DA, but can you get me a decent bankruptcy settlement or win my divorce? You might do okay, but it's not your specialty, right? Kidd's speciality is teen and family friendly banter- Russ's is dirty jokes, innuendo, practical jokes on his staff, etc...Far far different, so hard to compare.
But I'll leave you with this. Ever heard the phrase "when you're the lead dog, everybody's trying to bite you in the a**?". Ponder why Russ is going after Kidd and Kidd isn't returning serve. Kidd's been succesful in the market for decades, has a well-syndicated show in other markets, etc... Russ is plodding along with his one other station syndication deal, doing okay in his demo, but not drawing the attention, renown or salary that Kidd is.
If RUss was the lead dog, he wouldnt feel the need to bite Kidd or the Hardline or anyone else's a**...
But he's not, so he does...My psych degree tells me jealousy and envy issues, but that's just my unofficial opinion...
