Dial Global, Cumulus take significant Limbaugh hits

Dial Global Q2 Boosted By WW1 Addition But Loss Widens

[excerpt] costs up 250% ...

In its SEC filing's recitation of risk factors, the company noted without naming names that the RUSH LIMBAUGH controversy has "significantly impacted" DIAL GLOBAL's business and has led to some advertisers in News-Talk formats pulling ads that ran in proximity to that show and caused some ads to get pulled even though DIAL GLOBAL does not syndicate LIMBAUGH's show. The company says it has made "meaningful changes to our internal systems and procedures to allow us to better separate our advertisers' ads from certain controversial programming," but warned that "such process has consumed time and resources, and notwithstanding our efforts, certain advertisers have exited News/Talk programming and may not ultimately resume advertising in this area of programming at previous levels, or at all. If we are unable to bring back advertisers into our News/Talk radio programming, this would have an adverse effect on our revenue, which would have an adverse effect on our results of operations."

Limbaugh Boycott Draws Blood: Cumulus Media Cites ‘Drag’ In 2Q Revenue

[excerpt] ... second-quarter revenue from 10 stations owned by Cumulus Media (Nasdaq: CMLS) declined due to the boycott, CEO Jim Dickey said. Indeed, Dickey said in a conference call, lower sales at three of his 10 flagship talk radio stations cost $5.5 million due to "extraordinary issues" that included "the boycott that we saw from some remarks in a talk radio show," which he didn't specifically identify as Limbaugh's. Moreover, the Cumulus CEO anticipated the drag on business to continue for at least six months and as long as a year.

Virtually all of Limbaugh's technology advertisers have stopped sponsoring him except for private LifeLock...

Of course, Clear Channel is keeping any such damage to itself.

I think most of the damage will be limited to the 2nd Quarter, but there will be a lingering effect moving forward.

Maybe this will lead him to think before making such foolish comments in the future.

That's because CC owns the show is that a surprise.

Seems like much of the current ads are political groups, think tanks and campaign ads, what happens after the election and after Xmas? next year?

What happens after the election? It depends on who wins. Did you notice that GM was a huge sponsor on both Rush and Hannity prior to January 2009? After Obama took over GM, the ads stopped cold turkey. So did GM sales. Depending on the election outcome, the ads may be back.

Not to get off topic, but the I think the GM sales tanked with the economy, not with stopping talk radio advertising.

Then they came back and outsold Toyota to be the largest automaker in the World.

Of course they pulled ads from facebook as well, along with the "Superbowl"...therefore gm, like other advertisers is constantly evaluating advertising.

The GM sales are down globally again, but because of European and Asian sales,,,not related to the USA advertising market.

One thing that is interesting, whether GM or any other sponsor, radio hosts that advertise a product or service, then trash the sponsor when the ads are pulled, may find that free people want to advertise with them. Will a new sponsor be subject to the host's criticism when they stop the advertising.

Also, it might be noted that the auto industry seems to be doing better than the radio industry, particularly talk radio right now anyway.
