Dial Global Meltdown

Did anybody else experience the big Dial Global satellite outage on Thursday evening? I'm curious as to how widespread it was.

We have two Dial Global feeds--AC and classic rock. Didn't notice anything.

BTW--Sun outages starting this weekend. Several sites will give you times for your location for AMC-8

The outage was Global, of course. :D

It was, too...most D-G Wegener receivers went Tango Uniform...their control system sent out a salvo that killed 'em...

"Due to a failure of our receiver control system at approximately 8:06pm ET on Thursday evening, the channels of your satellite receivers may have been reset to a default channel causing an interruption of your regularly scheduled programming. The moment we detected the failure, we switched to a backup control system and immediately began sending commands to reset your receivers to the correct channels. We have identified the source of the problem, and have taken steps to ensure this does not happen again."

Some of my client's receivers went silent, and others played out Motor Racing Network. I think they were all back to normal in 30 minutes or so.

regarding the sun outages, here is the link to calculate the times for your location and satellite:

www.dg-tech.net and click on the sun outage link.

Check your emails, on Thursday 10/18 DG will be moving some MRN transponder assignments resulting in short outages. As long as your Wegener is hooked up to the internet all updates will be sent to it. If not you may have to make some manual entries to make it come alive again.

The outage specifically affected those on the Wegener receivers.

I experienced the same thing -- receivers either received nothing, or the MRN feed for the better part of an hour. The station callsign that the receiver is registered to changed on the front display. (to a callsign that I don't readily recall)

After the normal audio returned, I still did not receive closures for about another half hour or so, after which everything appeared normal.

Ugly. I can assure you that it wasn't sunfade.

Our 4 Wegeners went to Motor Trend Racing on Port A. Our fifth station uses a port B and just went dead.

My understanding was that all Wegeners went to a wrong feed. My receivers all showed "WTCH" on the front panel.

I'm not a Wegener fan. XDS in my opinion is a better unit.

But now I wonder if putting all eggs in one network basket is such a good idea.

speaking of all eggs in one basket.... It really scares me to know what DG might do with the westwood one MAX platform... Not the biggest fan of that one either but at least it works most of the time. Wegener is terrible all around, I mean it can't even time shift a 2 hr show day to day without screwing up at least once a month. I do realize that a lot of this may be from the operator more than the hardware but it does seem they have a lot more hardware troubles than they should.

Ours kept doing its thing on all channels. "...if you would like to authorize your reciever call...."
Nothing we use is on it anymore.

A local AM here sometimes airs that compelling programming "This is Dial Global Radio Networks AMC8 Transponder 13 ..."

Dial Global is changing from transponder 13 to 23 next week for programming on the Wegener receivers. Wonder how long it will take them to edit the announcement on the barker...
