Diamond Jim Nettleton "Gravely Ill"

Christy Springfield has posted on her Facebook page yesterday that Diamond Jim Nettleton is "gravely ill" and she has been asking for prayers.

I've got Diamond Jim in my thoughts and prayers, and hope he pulls through.

(Sam Lit, good buddy, I know you're out there, do you copy...)

How many of us would have given our eye-teeth to have "that sound" of Diamond Jim Nettleton through the years? From the legacy of a Famous 56 "Boss Jock" to WABC, WDRC in 1965 to WIBG-FM at "the shore" in 2009. A voiceover genius, a legend who worked out of a trailer on the lot at 'CAU-FM -- and, of course, WOGL and much much more.

He was also a competitive program director -- at WUSL -- when it was bought by LIN Broadcasting in the mid-70s and became "US 1" with a soft adult contemporary / standards mix under Jim's direction. Oh, how I'd have given an arm to work there.

I had the pleasure of successfully managing a station after leaving the Delaware Valley by way of Memphis and north to Minnesota, and though Jim was incredibly talented and so well known and loved throughout the Philadelphia area, I never have forgotten Jim and his "You're on US 1." His concept and insight sure worked for me and the communities served back in the early '80s.

I quickly bought the "Sounds Like Spring" ID package from Toby Arnold, who did the first two packages for Jim at WUSL and turned it into "Your Q-92" with what was a strong, melodic and just simply gorgeous jingle package, thanks to Jim -- and the privilege of being able to tell him so, personally.

One of my treasures is a Facebook note from him, as so many of us have received this year -- each personal, from one of the true "gentle men" of radio and a huge competitor, "Diamond" Jim Nettleton.

His work on his Internet radio web site -- a major passion -- allowing those of us who have moved on to remember "the sound of Philadelphia."

Jim, the prayers, thoughts and hopes of many many people who grew up with you will forever result in a warm "thank you" for all you gave us, for the talent you've shared in a market you love and the motivation and inspiration you will always be to those who think the world of you.

Jim, Godspeed ... and thank you.

I am very sorry to hear this sad news. Though I am only 31, I grew up listening to Jim and Hy Lit when they were both on WOGL. I remember when Jim first came to WOGL and took over the Sunday night edition of Hy Lit's Top 20 Countdown (5-7 pm) when Hyski moved to weekdays 1-4. I continued to listen to Jim when he was on WPEN. I have Diamond Jim's final show on WPEN on tape. It was really gut-wrenching to listen to as you could hear the emotion in his voice as he announced "the end of the road for Oldies 950". The last record I heard him play was "The End" by Earl Grant. "At the end of the highway there's no place you can go..." My prayers are with you Diamond Jim. Let's pray we have much longer until the end of the road.

He was the genius behind the Solid Gold Radio format, which he created on WCAU-FM from his Cherry Hill home, it was so successful it was picked up by WCBS-FM, and many other CBS owned stations, that had nothing to put on their signals. There are so many accomplishments this man did in radio, its impossible to list them all, I have to say he was one, if not the greatest PD and all around jock and always had time to talk radio and say hi to a friend.

Our prayers are with Jim and his family.
I too remember his days at WUSL and, specifically, his "Cadillac Big Band Saturday Night" show. He had a friend in that show from Munich, Germany, who was a huge big band fan.
I had the privilege to meet him once at Cooper River Park in Pennsauken, NJ. Quite the gentleman.
Be well, Jim.

Interesting thing about his Facebook page... Friends of his on Facebook such as myself have noticed that he was "posting" updates regularly, even as recent as this weekend. What happened was, Jim also has a Twitter account, and he set it up to be synced with his Facebook status every time he sends a new tweet. Unfortunately, his Twitter account was apparently taken over (possibly hacked) by a bot, which posts three or four tweets a day, accompanied by some sort of bit.ly link. It's a shame that this circumstance should arise at this, of all times...

My thoughts and prayers are with Jim and his Family.

We just lost one of our greats here in the Reading area.

Diamond Jim and the "Boss Jocks" of WFIL were a huge influence on us in this area.

We at WIBBAGE FM are very saddened to hear of Jim's condition. He has served with such
professionalism, style and distinction as only "Diamond Jim" could. His voice tracks for our morning drive
programming were outstanding. The consummate professional, Jim Nettleton's career spanned
many markets.. with a very strong national appeal. WIBG-FM has received calls from across
the country from listeners who love Jim Nettleton. From our entire staff, we offer our prayers
and thoughts for Jim and his wonderful family. God Bless You!

I was lucky enough to be hired as an intern and later a promotions assistant with WOGL during my college years. I got to know Jim well during my time there and was shocked by how little of an ego he has. Jim is genuine, Jim is real, and Jim is forever great. He's one of the all time best and I'm glad I've had the chance to learn from a legend. Brilliant is too little of a word to describe his talent and person.

Thank you, Jim.

Sorry to hear about Jim's recent health issues. I'm sure he's still thinking about the next talk-up; hitting the post without even trying. The consumate pro. Jim, please know you have a vast audience of fans and friends who are all thinking about you at this difficult time. My only hope is that he knows about the outpouring of good thoughts from the radio community.
Sincerely,
Jay
BE BIG!!
