Diamondbacks sign new TV deal - Bye-bye KTVK

Over-the-air baseball broadcasts end after this season. FSN-AZ will be carrying 150 D'backs games starting next year, in an 8-year deal. With 85% of metro Phoenix and 83% of the Tucson market receiving cable or satellite, it won't affect their viewership much.

No comment yet from KTVK, but I wonder if they just decided that baseball doesn't fit into their female-oriented schedule anymore.

Diamondbacks ratings aren't what they used to be. The drop in viewership has probably hurt KTVK more than FSN. FSN has a source of revenue that KTVK doesn't: subscriber fees from cable & satellite providers (although, I wonder if KTVK or other broadcasters will eventually force cable & satellite operators to pay them for carriage as part of retransmission deals? Or is this already happening?)

This is also probably one of the big reasons why Monday Night Football moved from ABC to ESPN: ESPN can "afford" to carry the games because they have subscriber fees; ABC does not.

The Diamondbacks will be available on broadcast TV, albeit not much, if FOX decides to air some of their games on the weekend.

There are probably too many housewives that are complaining that baseball is cutting into Dr. Phil on StuffChannel 3.

IIRC, Disney wants ABC to emphasize general entertainment and keep weekday sports on ESPN.

The Diamondbacks will be available on broadcast TV, albeit not much, if FOX decides to air some of their games on the weekend.

The remaining 12 games will be either on Fox (Channel 10) as their Saturday Game of the Week, or ESPN on those rare occasions that they're not broadcasting the Yankees, Mets, or Red Sox.

From now on there will be "Qwest Diamondbacks Baseball Presented by Gila River on FSN Arizona!" ;D

To be honest, the Diamondbacks may not have wanted to leave KTVK, but axing their in-house production crew will save them some money, especially with HDTV making things more expensive.

Now, in the case of the Suns causing scheduling problems during the D-Backs early season, will FSN make a deal with a broadcaster like AZ-TV or KUTP to air some of the bumped games over the air?

Sadly! Now they can go back to being the official forecasters for the Belo-owned Riverside, CA newspaper! :D
are you serious..? ???

Does this mean that we won't have to see the signage of KTVK in the visitors bullpen on FSN b'cast's or Fox or ESPN...?
Have to admit, it is a choice location for advertising signage.

As hard as I try to disbelieve, the more I think about it, the more I think the suits at Belo had a hand in this.

...then I take it the Spanish casts over KPHE 44 are also gone?...

The article doesn't say, but I'll guess "probably." I think KPHE uses the KTVK feed for their video.

...not always -- there was a game on Friday night that wasn't carried by KTVK that I watched on KPHE...

Completely serious!!! About a year ago, I went to visit my aunt in Riverside, CA. I picked up the morning local paper, flipped to the weather section, and THERE THEY WERE...THE FORECASTERS from KTVK!!  Needless to say, I was thinking, "What the h*** is this all about"?!? It was a branding thing, just like the Republic has a picture of Bill, Caribe, and Sarah from 12 News.

The interesting thing was that they just had a picture of "The Forecasters", but didn't explain that there were from a PHOENIX station!! I guess it's the closest Belo-owned station to Riverside.
