Diane Sawyer's First Night

Reviews? Did she perform well? Does ABC have anything to worry about?

I personally thought she did ok, ecept for the look on her face. It may beher normal look, but it seemed as if she showed a look of uneasiness, a little out of place. That should clear up in time. I know, it was her first night and all.

I felt she did fine. I liked the story selection, not much fluff in the newscast (aside from the report on Brittney Murphy's death).

My complaint is more stylistic: It seems they have returned to a single-camera single-shot program (that was used a lot by Peter Jennings toward the end) and very closely zoomed in on Ms. Sawyer when she is intro-ing a story. I much preferred the fuller shot used during Gibson's reign.

I liked the new graphics and set design as well--but I'm partial to more "blue" tones. As for the show, it was pretty much the same as World News was on Friday, and that's entirely the point.

I forgot to DVR it! I was home 30 minutes before she started and told a friend I was going to tape but never turned on TV. Searching on ABCNews.com and You Tube and can only find the first few minutes.

Good Luck Diane!

In all fairness I tried to watch Sawyer but switched to NBC about ten minutes into the newscast.

Sawyer still reminds me of a debutante reading from a teleprompter. And my opinion is not based on the fact she's a woman. The BBC for example has some excellent female news anchors.

The plain and simple truth is that I never thought much of Diane Sawyer; just like I never thought much of Paula Zahn, Connie Chung, or Barbara Walters.

I wish her the best, but this is one household that won't be going back to ABC's World News Tonight.

I'm sure most folks have. It's rather unorthodox for Diane to start her new role during a holiday week, immediately after Charlie left. I'm sure she'll be off at least four out of the next ten weeknights, anyway (like most people) so why couldn't they get an understudy to anchor the next two weeks?

It looked to me like the same set, more or less...

As for the graphics, it was a nice touch for the first major update since 2006. However, the absence of Bill Rice's voice from the intro for the first time in 25 years (after opening the broadcast for about 30 of the 31 years) was what set it apart. At least they kept the updated arrangement of Bob Israel's theme. If I recall correctly, the last time ABC changed the theme majorly, they pretty much went downhill.

The set looked like they gave it some freshening and "opening up" for lack of a better term, while retaining familiar elements.

Seemed like they used kind of a soft filter on her main camera to give her that all-too-familiar Diane Sawyer/Barbara Walters 'glowing' look. Still, it seemed like a solid newscast. I was impressed. She can run circles around Katie Couric.

And who did the voiceover on the intro? That voice is so familiar...just can't think of his name.

I noticed that Mike Rowe of Dirty jobs is the Voiceover in the open of world news replacing the other guy who did the Jennings and Gibson era

As I stated earlier, Bill Rice did the voiceovers for World News Tonight prior to Charlie's retirement. ABC ran a little story on him for World News Now a couple of years ago, and his involvement. His involvement with ABC's evening newscasts date back to the Harry Reasoner era, and continued through the Jennings/Reynolds/Robinson era, and well through the Jennings/Gibson years, aside from 83-84 when Bill Owen replaced him temporarily.

In an interesting note of inconsistency with the network graphics for World News, ABC made an interesting choice to retain the old graphics, along with Bill Rice's voiceover for tonight's "World News" Saturday edition rather than create a custom variant for the weekend version.
