Dic Youngs and Polly Carver-Kimm out at KIOA

Sad news.  Sounds like an attempt to skew to a younger demo in the case of Youngs.  Pure cost-cutting in the case of Carver-Kimm.  (Why, by golly, they'll probably save a few bucks without having Youngs as a full-timer as well.  Of course, that had NOTHING to do with it. Absolutely not.)

I first heard "The Old Youngster" on KSO here in Northern Illinois on its then-strong nighttime skywave signal in 1965.  Went to college in Iowa a year later, and there he was on KIOA.  I've caught his show on numerous business trips, etc. to Iowa since.

My view is when Dic Youngs gets shoved out the door into "retirement" next month, the dumbing-down of KIOA into just another soul-less drone will be complete.  A process in no small way enhanced by the departure of Polly Carver-Kimm.

I agree.
It occurred to me quite some time ago that I never hear the music I buy and listen to at home played on the radio. I like music from the first 10 years of R&R, Bluegrass, Calypso, 1930's and 1940's swing bands. These are all as rare as hens teeth on the radio.

I agree about them trying to appeal to a younger demographic and this puzzles me. I am 60. My house is paid for, I have no debts, my kids are through school and on their own. I now have more disposable income that at any period in my life. You'd think that radio advertisers would be after it. Nope.

So who replaced Dic Youngs?

I know a guy who kept telling me he was up for the job but I think it was all just a bunch of bull.

It's NOT KIOA without Dic Youngs. The station is effectively dead now. We all knew one day he wouldn't be on the air anymore, but how many people grew up listening to him? The old youngster will be missed.

dont know if anybodys still reading this thread==maybe this is more for me than anybody
I moved to Texas in 2006 from central Iowa where i grew up listening to Dic Youngs and Polly Carver-Kimm

All i can say is it saddens me to see that the golden age of radio is now totally gone in my old home area
