Dick Clark dies at 82

Dick Clark, the music industry maverick, longtime TV host and powerhouse producer who changed the way we listened to pop music with "American Bandstand," and whose trademark "Rockin' Eve" became a fixture of New Year's celebrations, died today at the age of 82.

Clark's agent Paul Shefrin said in statement that the veteran host died this morning following a "massive heart attack."

And yet last New Year's Eve he didn't look a day over 40.

This is such sad news. I mostly knew him from "Pyramid" but of course he was my choice on New Year's Eve.

I guess I have to switch to Carson Daly now. I only had one reason to watch Seabiscuit. Daly is a pro.

Maybe the Mayans were right......Who's gonna bring in 2013?

I'm sorry, but I'd take Donny Osmond anyday over Seacrest.....

Very sad news. Dick was on TV for so long and was known by generations in his many different roles.

I wonder if ABC will keep his name as part of its "Rockin' Eve" show. I assume Dick Clark Productions will remain in business.

I don't mean for this to make light of the situation (it's not at all my intent), but I expect GSN to announce plans for a $25,000 Pyramid/$100,000 Pyramid marathon in the very near future (perhaps this upcoming weekend).

RIP Dick!! You made American Bandstand, and paired with Ed McMahon for TV's Bloopers and Practical Jokes, as well as doing Rockin' Eve. On December 31st, I won't be watching it. Rockin' Eve is no longer the same without Dick.

I hope they do an excellent tribute to ring in 2013, and I hope they air clips of Dick Clark anyway for many many years to come! (or forever, maybe...)

ABC will absolutely do a tribute on New Years Eve 2012. Take that one to the bank.

I would also expect an ABC retrospective in the 20/20 slot either this Friday or next.

I would have liked to have seen GSN dig up some episodes of Pyramid from the 70's, but apparently that isn't happening. I've read where they're extremely hard to find since they suffered the same fate like a lot of other early game shows of either being recorded over or trashed. There is a clip on the Buzzerblog article and probably more on You Tube though.

If GSN is planning a "Pyramid" marathon, I wonder if they'll also show all six episodes of the ill-fated CBS primetime game show he hosted in early 2000, "Winning Lines" - clearly produced as a result of the success of "Millionaire".

Two words. Hologram technology. ;)

Joking aside, New Year's Eve certainly won't feel the same without Dick Clark around.

RIP

As someone on the Classic TV board noted--we've lost both Dick Clark and Don Cornelius (back in February) in the same calendar year. When talking about culturally significant TV shows dedicated to popular music, both American Bandstand and Soul Train top the list.

Lets not forget that "TV Bloopers and Practical Jokes" is coming back to TV in September 2012 in syndication with new episodes. I hope they find someone who'll can really fill Clark's shoes.

Clark sold his company to Redskins owner Dan Synder five years ago, but still stayed on in some sort of capacity. His son, Richard II, serves as a producer within the company.

they may be legally required to

Even if they are not required to, they probably will, out of respect.
