Dick Clark Passes

Heaven just inherited a great tv show host

:'(

I started out playing his "Rock, Roll & Remember" radio show on vinyl records in the mid-80s (I date myself!).

The REALLY sad part!!? Ryan Seacrest salivating to fill his ENORMOUS shoes.

I go back further than that...I watched Bandstand on TV when I was in kindergarten...51 years ago.

As for Ryan...c'mon, Dick himself picked Seacrest. He was the annointed successor.

I watched Bandstand too, and have seen almost every show.

But will people buy Searest as DC's successor!!? He already replaced DC on "New Years' Rockin' Eve," but that's about it.

Bug: Maybe I'm out of touch...what's left that Dick was doing for Seacrest to take over?

Gotcha beat Michael. I was 13 when Bandstand came to my town in 1957.

R.I.P. Dick Clark. I agree, no matter what you think of Ryan Seacrest, Dick endorsed and most likely mentored Mr. Seacrest. With Ryan's involvement in American Idol, on E!, on the radio, and other projects, he seems on a similar career track. Whether or not he attains Dick Clark's iconic stature, only time will tell.

I can see Ryan Seacrest as Clark's replacement. I respect Clark's talent as an entrepreneur and producer, but in my opinion, as an on-air personality (don't everybody attack me now), he was unexciting. I grew up with Bandstand, but also local LA dance party shows like 9th St West/Boss City/Real Don Steele, Groovy, and others. The local hosts (Sam Riddle, Steele, Robert W. Morgan - even Casey Kasem on the short-lived Shebang had a lot more personality. I see Seacrest as the same type.

Interestingly enough, Clark was a good actor. Some years ago, I caught a Perry Mason rerun in which he played a rich neer-do-well alcoholic playboy. He did a pitch-perfect job, even slurring his words just a little like he'd had a cocktail before testifying. IIRC, he was the guilty one, too, and did the ubiquitous confession at the end.

Clark was also hilarious playing himself in a cameo on Police Squad.

Growing up with Dick Clark in the 70's and 80's with the Pyramid shows and American Bandstand and Dick Clark's New Years Rockin' Eve shows.......this guy is a legend among legends!! You will be missed!

End of an era... Someone asked about any shows he was still on. Dick's pre-stroke voice tracks were still being used on Rewind with Gary Bryan.

When producing the station's jingles at JAM we always had Dick Clark jingles done as well. In the early years we would also have ones produced that mimicked those used on the syndicated show that was customized for us. Proud to say that I've got them all. You can still find some of the old TV spots that he was on for us on You Tube as well.

RIP Mr. Clark...

Dick was a class act in an an industry with so very few of them.

I was always a fan of Dick's entrepreneurship - I don't know what sort of background he came from, but whatever tools he had to start with, he turned them into many successful ventures in so many different areas. Bandstand, Rockin' Eve, Pyramid and many other TV shows, radio shows and stations, advertising, his own production company, and probably more that I don't even know about.

Class Act, Good Guy, American Icon, and Great American Entrepreneur. Well done sir.

At one point, it looked like Rick Dees was poised to become that guy. His Weekly Top 40 was at one time syndicated by Dick's company. There were some similarities, in terms of youthful appearance and energy. Don't know what happened there. Then Ryan came along, and had that same youthful appearance and energy, plus the entrepeneurship that others have mentioned. That's such an important part of Dick's success. Most people would have been satisfied being on the air in Philadelphia. Dick dreamed bigger. Not many people, especially at that time, dreamed that big. And all his dreams came true.

I had a chance to meet Dick and watch him work many times. I'd chat with him at various LA functions, visited his office in Burbank, even interviewed him a few times, and just enjoyed listening to his advice. I followed up on every suggestion he gave, and I'm thankful for every minute I got to spend in his presence.
