Dick Ebersol: Versus Getting A New Name

Plus, despite being only two syllables, it's somewhat of a tongue-twister. Repeat it 5X and even the best voices begin to slur. "NBC Sports Channel" sounds sorta dumb, although it it is easy. "Universal Sports" is already taken. Sadly, they will probably go with "CSN National" or "CSN America" to tie Versus to the varied CSN outlets across America.
 
Knowing NBC's penchant for mangling network names, maybe it'll be SPRTSRC.

They could have done CSN America earlier if they wanted to. But because the bulk of RSNs are Fox Sports outlets, name recognition would be entirely lacking in the South, Texas, and Mountain West regions of the country. NBC's name recognition is national – and for that matter, global.
 
I got it: "NBC Sportsnet."

Think along all the regional "Comcast Sportsnet" channels. And I don't think the "Fox Sports Net" folks would mind much.

To be fair, one of our own posters saw this one coming after the NBC/Comcast merger.

So there's this, CBS Sports TV (the former CBS College Sports) and of course, Fox Sports. What are the odds ESPN becomes "The ABC Sports Channel"? ::)

Can't be ABC Sports as that's ESPN.

That said however, Versus is just too generic of a name to keep. My bet is on Peacock Sports. That would prominently display the NBC branding without the direct tie to NBC though talent & some imaging would be shared like Fox Sports does with the true FSN outlets (I say True FSN outlets because while ROOT Sports has the backing of Fox Sports, it still uses the OLD Fox Sports graphics rather than the new package that rolled out at the beginning of the last NFL season)

Just my opinion.....

No but SportsWorld does. In fact, that was the name of their anthology series back in the 1970s & 1980s

NBC broadcast carries college football too--well, Notre Dame football to be specific. I wonder if Ebersol will use his ND connections to add more sports from the school on the cable network?...

As for the response on the hunting programs on VS. that are supposedly paid by the producers, they could still make the decision that those shows aim too much to a niche demographic (not to mention, the glut of other outlets for outdoor sports) and put regular infomercials in their place. Then again, the Christian networks air many of the same national televangelists because they want to air on multiple outlets to get their message across.

They most likely will keep the "Motorsports Hour," which I believe is a time buy from Lucas Oil and airs on multiple networks, including Speed Channel and the small MavTV network (which Lucas Oil happens to own a stake in).

I remember seeing a promo during the NHL playoffs for the ND Blue and Gold game (in what they claimed to be its first telecast).

And I still like "NBC Versus" for the network, though that would obviously be a temporary name.
 
MSNBC Sports or CSN?
They also show the DL,Sports Soup,TO show and usly to the daily Line. Could do Sports Central to go up against Sportscenter,Baseball Central to go up against Baseball Tonight,Show Sports Night reuns,Sport Game Shows like Sports Jeopardy and so on.

I like the idea of having shows like sportscentral which the other poster said. Great idea. As for a name for the network NBC should go with something simple. How about Sports Channel NBC or even NBC Sports TV.
 
I think it will likely just be "NBC Sports" or "NBC Sports Network." Ever since Comcast took over NBC they have been running promos on their regional sports networks saying "CSN _____ is now part of NBC Sports." This could perhaps be building up the NBC Sports brand for the eventual rebranding of Versus.

Good point. I've seen those on MLB EI: "Comcast SportsNet ______ is now part of NBC Sports Group".
