Dick Farrel Joins WDJA

From AllAccess.com

SOUTH FLORIDA talk radio veteran DICK FARREL has joined PROFESSIONAL BROADCASTING Talk WDJA-A (POWER TALK 1420 AM)/DELRAY BEACH-WEST PALM BEACH for weekdays 10a-noon.
FARREL, most recently Operations Dir. of crosstown NORTH PALM BEACH BROADCASTING Adult Standards WSVU-A-W240CI-W294AM (SEAVIEW 960 AM), has been heard in the market on WJNO-A, WBZT-A, and WPBR-A and on WIOD-A/MIAMI. His arrival at WDJA bumps TALK RADIO NETWORK's LAURA INGRAHAM to noon-3p, replacing WESTWOOD ONE's defunct FRED THOMPSON show.

I've listened the first two shows, he sounds pretty good and it sounds like he's found the right station that needs him. I think he's a good alternative to Glenn Beck and Joy Browne and he might bring in some advertisers to Byron Eggers and the gang. Regardless of his past stints or what people might have thought of him in the past, he's worth a listen.

Dick Farrel broke into South Florida on WIOD in the late 80's as one of many prototypical members of the Reagan generation of young conservatives on the radio. Contemporaries in other markets like Mark Belling, Mark Davis, Mark Larsen and others rode the coattails of Rush Limbaugh and became institutions. Had Miami been like most other U.S. markets, Farrel probably would have become that equivalent.

Yes, Neil Rogers' dominance was a factor, but the fact that a local conservative icon did NOT emerge in that formative era, and that long-time conservative hosts like Farrel and Steve Kane are forced to broker time on marginal stations, should tell radio station management that there's something different about South Florida. Too bad they're not paying attention.

Always liked Dick Farrel on air. Question is he on staff at WDJA or is he brokering the airtime, then going out and selling spots in a Steve Kane like arrangement? And wondering...Joyce Kaufman...is she "on staff" at WFTL or does she buy her airtime blocks, as well, like Kane.

I have that same question (I'd wager he's brokering time).

And smedge2006 is right on all counts, I'd say. Thing is, management isn't paying attention in markets all over the country, not just SoFla.

Kaufman is staffed by WFTL. She brings in a lot clients, and that's why you hear her endorsing all of them.
Dick is still brokering time, but now he's on a station that doesn't play Haitian music and talk 22 hours a day. He's actually on a station that airs conservative talk form 6am to 9pm weekdays.

Honestly, with competition from the other talkers like Glenn Beck and Dr. Joy Browne, I'd rather listen to Dick. Plus, you get more morning talk with a local spin after 850 and 1290 finish their local morning news.
