I wondered what happened to Dick! I wasn't sure he was still alive. I guess he was a little younger than I thought he was back when I was working for him in the late '80s.
That was a good story. Dick was/is a colorful guy. Lots of funny memories came back as I read that story. Plus, he had just about the best set of pipes I've ever heard.
Dick Richards must be his real name...who in the hell would name a kid Richard Richards? I think he stopped by my fry wagon one time at the Clearfield Fair. He was a nice enough guy but I think he had more grease in his hair than I had in my fryer! I think he used more than "a little dab" as the old advertising slogan went.
I too remember Dick Richards as suave and smooth on the air...and a naturally-genial guy in real life.
With a naturally-thick head of shiny, black hair..he didn't need to be a "greaser" to hold his mop in place. Di Andrea was Altoona other dark haired Romeo of the radio...and the two of them made us all proud at WFBG-AM-FM-TV in the 60's. Richard REALLY knew his music...and THAT's what I remember him for the most. And that was when WFBG played a wide spectrum of songs during the day. After 8pm...it was Di Andrea's All-Nite-Satellite! And then came "Bandstand"! There were lots of really GOOD PEOPLE out there ..and that audience kept the two young pro's there for lifetimes worth sharing and remembering. I remember Altoona that way.
