Did a HD scan for Austin radio

Kind of a update Austin HD scan, KUT has 2 subchannels, HD-2 Is news HD-3 is Jazz, KKMJ HD-2 Oldies, KHFI is off, KVET is off, KASE was off, 102.3 none 103.5 HD-2 Smooth Jazz. KGSR has a local artists on HD-2.

Not very all impressive.

That's interesting. I haven't checked for HD on the AM side lately. Maybe WOAI was concerned about IBOC affecting their analog signal during Spurs playoff game broadcasts?

It may have to do something with the Spurs. In Houston, KILT-FM always turns their HD off when they broadcast the Texans games. Probably some issues with the broadcasting rights contract.

Thanks for the update. If you ask me, the analog seems a bit worse over here in College Station now that the HD is off for KHFI. Seems to have better coverage with HD on for some odd reason.
I was going to ask you jras, any update on KDHT HD2? Are they now on? I was receiving them about two weeks ago (don't ask how I got rid of the KSBJ translator, a long story), but couldn't quite lock them in HD.

Nope nothing on KDHT-2 the HD is on KDHT-1.

One of the reasons why all of these HD's keep going off is problems with the technology. I know that KASE, KVET and KHFI are off because they are fixing issues with the awful IBOC units. Also, I am guesing the reason that KILT turned off HD during the Texans games is because HD forces you to be delayed by at least 8 seconds. If its off you can be actually live so that people watching on TV are more likely to also listen to the radio or for those in the stands who want to listen while seeing it live. That same issue exists in San Antonio with the Spurs and in Austin with University of Texas sports.

I see HDRadio making a big move, I think its a little late coming out. With radios not very cheap, Gas prices up, I see it having a hard time coming out. It may end up like AM stereo did.

Yep...that boat may have already sailed. I had the CE of one Austin FM tell me that "yes, we will have digital radio. But not THIS digital radio."

Yes, there is another kind of digital radio out there that is supposedly "better, stronger, faster....and cheaper" that may come up in the future. The problem is that Clear Channel is a big investor in the IBOC technology so they are doing everything they can to get the FCC to make it the standard. The big problem with IBOC (one of the big problems) is that the bandwidth is just not there to do all these HD2, HD3 etc. and make them sound good. The standard analog FM signal is better then the IBOC digital signal in most cases. Quite frankly, what they should have done is to work it more like TV is doing and create an HD Radio that a better quality digital signal of the analog and then eventually move to that and drop the analog. Trying to squeeze in more content is ludicris, especally since they have no way currently to make revenue off of it.

By the way, KVET and the other Clear Channel Austin stations all have HD channels (KVET's "Mother Trucker" is kind of interesting) but they are frequently off because of technical issues.
