Did anyone see this coming today?

There has been speculation in the last few months on a station flipping to JACK, even WCBS-101, but did anyone hear anything about it happening today? They seemed to keep this tightly under wrap. Did any of the DJ's give a cryptic message as to what was to come at 5PM?

According to another source - all right, I'll say it, Allan Sniffen's website - nobody knew about the flip until 4 PM that afternoon. Heck, if I've had advanced notice, I'd most definitely would have rolled tape... (As would most of us radio geeks. ;) )
______________

I expected that WXRK-92.3 would go "Jack", after Howard Stern left.

Maybe that was Infinity's original plan, but they probably heard a tip that someone else was thinking of launching a "Jack"-type format in New York, so Infinity decided they had to do something now.

Still, I probably would have done what Infinity did in Buffalo--launch "Jack" on 92.3 20/5 (and 24 hours on weekends) until Stern left, then go 24/7 "Jack".

And on the WCBS-101.1 website as of 6:30 P.M. EDT Friday (June 3rd), there is an icon where you can listen online to the former oldies format, still identified as "CBS FM 101.1".

If WCBS-101.1 indeed has HD radio up and running, might the former format be carried on a "subcarrier" of the HD signal??

Probably not. WPLJ may have been nibbling at the format with their "Flush the Format" stunts - but the fact that Chicago's WJMK flipped at the same exact time disputes that idea.
______________

If there were HD radios more readily available, then it would have been cool to keep oldies on one channel, and jack on the other. Give it some time - another year or two, and we'll be talking about how cbsfm is back and available with hd only.

Its easy to change a format on a dime in today's age. Been there, done that. Sound like Mr Prendergast yanked hard drives out of the AudioVAULT at 4pm & presto - a new radio station complete with music, liners, etc.

That's the 2nd format flip that I didn't see coming. I was more surprised by WCBS-FM's flip than WCAA's flip to mostly reggaeton. I thought either 102.7 or 92.3 would have gone "Jack".

and 13 years later, reflecting on the events of that day, I'm still amazed....

back then, I was an aficionado of radio...and a student of WCBSFM's history (I think Brucie once referred to me as such) - anyhow.....

I was one of those who always got heads-up on things going on....because I was NOT one to go blabbing stuff - but on this one - I had NO clue what was happening.....

"....it was the 3rd of June...
another sleepy, hot, summer day...."
