Did Anyone Think....

That during this week's coverage...that George Plaster and his crew lost a lot of credibility in the marketplace? And did you hear the Friday "patting ourselves on the back" fest? Friends at dinner talked about what a total blow hard he has become.

Wonder what Willy thinks about his roofie conspiracy? LOL

IMO, George Plaster and the air staff on 104.5 The Zone lost their credibility a long time ago. I do think the way they carried on last week about the Steve McNair situation DAMAGED their CREDIBILITY beyond repair. Some of the comments the air personalities made were out of line. One air personalities stated that the place of Steve McNair's death would be a shrine where the people of Nashville will be taking their Out-Of-Town for years to come. Another air personality stated that he would ALWAYS REMEMBER where he was and what he was doing when he heard about Steve McNair's death, equating it to JFK's death and 9/11. And another made the comment on Wednesday evening that for those attending the Steve McNair Memorial Service, it would be a great opportunity to get autographes and photos made with the players since just about every player that has ever been associated with the Titans would be in attendance.

CB, you are only eighteen or so years late. I thought the ultimate in Plaz's self-importance tour was their on-air contract signings a couple of years ago. The Zone dedicated a couple of hours' prgramming to this overblown "ceremony".

If any credibility was lost, it was entertainment value. Afternoon Sports Zone is not journalism unless they bring in Climer or another columnist. Then you must decipher soft journalism from cheerleading (cough, McCormick, cough, McClain). When the Billy Volek trade happened a few years back, the Ol' Director was yapping about his free Braves tickets or his one year in Memphis or some other story we've heard ad nauseum. The NFL Network scooped local media by announcing Volek to San Diego. Suffice it to say Plaz was not pleased about Titans camp not letting him know.

First call from John McClain after McNair's death included a plug for the journalist's July 27 local appearance with Eddie George. This was within the first minute, if my clock was correct. Something about a friend in a Waco emergency room, phone call, seeing number was Eddie George confirming their July local appearance. Shill.

Darren went into a lame attack on a New York newspaper article with unnamed sources implying McNair had another girlfriend elsewhere. But Darren makes no apologies in using unnamed sources and friends when it comes to Kentucky basketball hiring Billy Donovan, oops, Gillespie. Same goes for Darren reporting from afar on Pitino's blackmail case.

I "zoned out" on 104.5 their very first day (six years ago), because the other guys seemed lost without Plaster. They talked about him incessantly, even though he was still under contract to another station at the time. Granted, it was the first day, but they still came off as unprepared amateurs.

The fawning over McNair reminds of the way Entertainment Tonight "reporters" said that Michael Jackson "died too soon" or was "taken too young." That is not "reporting," that is editorializing or even pontificating! I actually think Michael Jackson lived too long, but I am expressing that as my opinion, not "reporting" it as "fact."

Like Plaz or not. You are listening. If you aren't, then you are talking about him because somebody you know is listening. Numbers don't lie.

C'mon, you guys sometimes act like you know far less about the radio industry than I know you really do. Or are you just trying to bait a response?

The Zone is Sports TALK, not Sports Journalism. The guys on the air will tell you they are more entertainers than journalists. Sports reporting, whether in newspaper, TV, or radio has always been part entertainment. Now I'm not saying that discussing someone's death is entertainment, I'm just saying that those leading the discussion are more entertainers than journalists.

I flip between Ramsey and Plaster. IMHO Ramsey presents a more informative, less entertaining show than Plaster. Both shows have their ruts and repetition. When I tire of one I will flip to the other. By 5:00 my radio is off. I am jogging or end of work day.

I don't deny Plaz and his crew are entertainers for local fans. Just like Limbaugh, Gill, Hannity, NPR or anyone else with a loyal local or national following. Part of their schtick is creating a frenzy.
