Did Boston sports radio fail us?

listened to the big show friday for a little bit,they were talking about play-off scenarios for the Sox,at no time did I hear the scenario that actually happened talked about.
I was quite shocked when I tuned into WEEI at 5P.M. yesterday to hear that the Yankees won the division.
I am wondering did anyone hear this scenario talked about on any sports talk show?

Even on New York sports radio (660 WFAN/1050 WEPN) they said that a tie Sunday would result in a playoff Monday. If that resulted in a tie with Cleveland, then they would play on Tuesday.

Very suprised it wasn't even mentioned until the 7th or 8th inning on Saturday on WCBS broadcast. I can't get WEEI/RS Network until nite here in NY (WTIC 1080 Hartford), so I don't know if they were aware either.

Nope. Then again I was watching the abysmal FOX Sport coverage of .... I think it was the Red Sox Yankee game but then again it might have been the Chicago game and then they had the scores of all the games and the names of all the announcers all on the TV screen at the same time. You could hardly see the Sox game because FOX had srunken the screen so badly to fit all the other junk on there. What a mess. So, WEEI is a great station and had great radio coverage of the game. I won't criticize them even if they slipped up a little. At least they are NOT FOX Sports. What a disaster.
 
I don't think ANYONE in the area knew about it, because my friends and I were incredibly confused Sat afternoon to hear about the Yanks winning the division. I love WEEI but they truly dropped the ball on this one. The thing that frustrated me is that after New York was declared AL East champs, I couldn't find a channel on tv or radio that would explain what happened. A funny thing happened last night: I was listening to Dickerson about 7pm... a caller came on and said "I want to know what happened this weekend with the Yankees winning the division. All I heard all week long was this playoff game Saturday, and then....". The caller's cell phone cut out at this point. Dickerson said "well the caller got cut off, I don't know what your question was so let's go to the next caller". The next called wanted to talk Pats. Thus no explaination, or admitting of wrongdoing. Conspiracy!

I thought going into the weekend series that if the Yankees could take one game, they'd be division champs, since that would mean they won the season series.
Was this not mentioned on 'EEI?

The scenario was so convoluted that even the Yankee players didn't quite realise they'd won the division. The short answer is that when Cleveland lost on Saturday. the winner of the Sox-Yankee game automatically clinched a playoff spot. By winning the game the Yankees clinched the playoff spot and also won the East because of a better head-to-head record against the Sox.

It was, but IF it came down to one team making the playoffs and one team going home there would have been a playoff for the division. Going into the weekend, Cleveland and the Sox were tied for the wild card and the Yankees were up a game in the division. If Cleveland had swept the White Sox this weekend and the Sox won two of three, the Indians would have clinched the wild card and the Sox and Yanks would have played a playoff game today for the division. This was the only scenario where the division would have been up for grabs (outside of a Sox sweep) and that's what most of the hosts and fans were assuming would happen. Nobody thought that Cleveland would have been swept by a White Sox team who had already clinched the Central division and had nothing to play for. But even if the Indians HAD won two of three, the Yankees would have won the division anyway and the Sox would have played Cleveland for the wild card. That part was not made clear by WEEI.

Overall I got the impression that the hosts were hashing out playoff scenarios, not necessarily division winning possibilities. I will also give WEEI the pass that it's extremely difficult to break down all the different combinations of things verbally on the air. It's much easier to see it in print or online. Still, they could have done more to understand the rules and explaining them to the callers leading up to the weekend.

I didn't have a chance to read the papers over the last week or so. Did the Globe and Herald get it right, or did they miss it too?

There were so many different things that could have happened, and the Indians getting swept was at the very bottom of that list. I did hear them mention time and time again the only way we would have a 1 game playoff is if one of the teams was gonna be eliminated. The indians were only 3 games behind the white sox and had they swept them would have tied there record, BUT the white sox already clinched the division, because they had a better record against the indians. WEEI gave this information out, so one could assume the same would hold true for the red sox/yankees. Regardless the whole thing is confusing haha. But I don't think WEEI "failed us", I think we are lucky to have a station that good in this area.

As far as the fox broadcast, no idea what they were thinking on that one. That was just crazy. The Red Sox and Yankees are the biggest rivalry in all of sports...what makes you think we want to watch the indians and white sox? Not to mention they kept coming back late from commercials. They should be ashamed, biggest game of the season and they botched it.
