Did Howard Get Lib-Talk Radio Critic Sacked?

Fans of AAR may be happy to learn that New York Post part-time radio columnist, full-time consultant, former WABC program director, and frequent critic of liberal talk radio has lost his newspaper column. Of course, he can always start a blog. As Brian Maloney says, "We don't need no stinkin' newspaper."

RadioDailyNews.com
John Mainelli, the New York Post writer who irked Howard Stern by reporting a rumor that he would return to terrestrial radio with his tail between his legs on Tuesday, has left the paper after receiving an ultimatum from editor in chief Col Allan. Allan told Mainelli Wednesday that he had to choose between his freelance job covering the radio industry for the Post and his lucrative sideline consulting for radio stations and owners. "I consider myself fired," Mainelli tells Radar. "I can't live on what I earn from the Post" (read more - Editor and Publisher) (read more - Jeff Bercovici-Radar)

Northeast Radio Watch
Over at the New York Post, radio columnist John Mainelli was abruptly fired late last week, with Howard Stern taking on-air credit for the action. At issue, apparently, is an article Mainelli wrote that passed along the rumor that Stern's show might return to terrestrial radio via syndication on Citadel stations. Mainelli says (in an appearance on the Opie & Anthony show Friday morning) that Mainelli also underestimated Stern's subscriber base on Sirius - and that Stern complained to Post management that Mainelli was continuing his consulting business while writing for the paper. (As a well-known former New York PD, Mainelli's consulting work was hardly a secret to anyone in the city, as far as we know.)

Mainelli says the Post gave him an ultimatum - stop consulting or stop writing for the paper. "I guess I'm fired," he told Opie & Anthony.

Good riddance! Mainelli is to newspaper radio criticism what Maloney is to radio blogging.

Say what you want about John Mainelli -- he may have put the best regular lineup in the history of talk radio on the air when he was PD of WABC-AM in NY.
He is still a legendary PD.

Today, WABC's hosts are very bland, boring and "safe." (with the possible exception of Curtis and Kuby; though Curtis was brought in by Mainelli).
