Did Jack in Midland Hit the Road?

I caught 102.1 this morning here in Lubbock via tropo. My RDS no longer displayed JACK FM...In fact, it was showing the current song playing (I knew this was unusual because I know JACK in Midland did not scroll the song names via RDS). Either I heard a different 102.1 this morning or Jack FM in Midland has gone back to classic rock again.

Wait, Midland has song scrolling?
Yeah. Got an ID today. Classic Rock 102.

And yes, Midland has song scrolling. Many of their stations do if I'm not mistaking. I think 106.7 scrolls songs...and I know for a fact that Kiss FM Midland does it as well. I think they have done that for quite awhile now. KBXJ "The West Texas Jukebox" just started scrolling songs too if I'm not mistaking.

That's why it's always surprised me that Lubbock does not scroll songs. I remember I started a thread about it a long time ago and they said it's too expensive to do it.

The RDS gear needed at the transmitter isn't too bad, but the systems needed to read a CD in the CD player, or off a hard-drive are a bit pricey.

I understand that Hard-Drive playback is a bit easier to deal with since all of the data regarding title/artist/album is easily to be had supposedly.

But if a station still does "live" playback from CD or other, it's a bit more cumbersome (and expensive) to do.

Seems like all the JACKs in West Texas are dying off. First it was here in Lubbock and now Midland. How is Jack in Amarillo holding out?

Probably because to be a JACK FM out here(and markets smaller than 100), it means no djs, no personalities, nothing. Not even a morning show. How many times can I listen to the same JACK FM liners? It's fun at first, but after a while, it just get's boring. If I wanted music without interactin, I'll just plug my iPod in.

In the case of KJDL, the music came from the bird, with no control, which made for some interesting remotes. How do you sell local air time on a station when you can't even work remotes in?

I live out of town, but it looks like The jack website is still up. Have they really changed? And if they did , will Steve Driscoll come back. I knew him whenI work at Steam broadcasting which owned KUFO and KOYL.

So, in other words,
KZFX goes back to rock.
I thought they were once an FMX clone? I also thought they were owned by GAP?

GAP recently unloaded the Midland/Odessa cluster.

The old FZX was always a classic-based rock station...I'd say 70-80% classic rock for most of it's existence as "FZX." Other than the call letters and logo, it wasn't really an FMX clone.
