Did KFRG Begin the "Frog/Froggy" Imaging that Other Country Stations Use

When KFRG came on the air in late 1989 and quickly soon after had much success in the Inland Empire it seems like the "Frog/Froggy" imaging appeared on several country stations around the nation.

One of the Froggy station's bumper sticker, WGGY Froggy 101, has appeared somewhat prominently in "The Office."

So, did the Inland Empire station on 95.1 start the "Frog" imaging, or did they use/buy/least the image from another "Frog" station?

I believe it was first used at an FM in PA... maybe State College or Altoona. And IIRC, it was a Kirby Confer run property, and I think Confer brought the concept to the IE when Keymarket bought the station from Major Market in '89.

Back in the '70s, KMEN 1290 San Bernardino had a frog as a station mascot. "Tyrone the Frog" originally a (Huckleberry Chuck Clemens) morning show character evolved into the station mascot, complete with a green shaggy carpet frog-suit, used to make appearances at remotes and other events. Ribbit.

Yes, those were fun times at KMEN. I used to do vacation relief on the morning show in 1974 & 1975. Consultant Ed Shane seems to take credit for the froggy format at KFRG.

Ah, the good old days of Inland Empire radio.

Back when K/MEN was promoting Tyrone, Rex Ramsey, working at competitor KFXM and a flippant air personality, opened his mic, cleared his throat and said "I've got a frog in my throat, and a frog is a bad thing to have in radio!"
