Did KIXI make the right decision?

I don't have access to the numbers but am curious on how KIXI is doing with a satellite line-up as opposed to their former live and local crew. Now that its been a few books, does anyone have any insight?

I'm sure there's at least one front where they'd scream "YES" emphatically ... the economic one if nothing else. As a (former) listener, though, I miss the "sizzle" and tightness the station had. Most people probably don't really care ... but it really felt more local and alive when not on the bird.

The ratings are about the same, according to what I've seen. I'm sure that Dan would argue something similar, but maybe 'cause he gets more data than I do, he can enlighten us further.

If you're looking at this station from King Marc's chair, then the cost of running local vs. Sat. really makes this station a lot more profitable today then it was a year ago.

It's a short term fix in my view for an organization who seems ever more eager to be milking every dime and is acting like they're ever so much more strapped for cash. In the end, it's going to bite them in the book.

As I always say, people listen (or watch in the case of TV) "local for local". If everything sounds like it's coming out of Dallas or Denver, most people are going to pick up and move on in time. The old folks listening to KIXI just haven't picked up on it entirely yet, but they will sooner or later.

I too miss the local angle. Not sure what the ratings are but everytime I listen I long for Morton and the rest of the crew. Chuck southcut is unbelievable boring and that guy at night with the fake accent? please! the music is slightly different too. Just not the same. Hope the beancounters are happy though. After all that's all that matters anymore

KIXI is virtually unchanged. The 25-54 is almost always sub one share. This book it was particularly low. However their older demo's are up a bit. Statisically, I guess you could say the satellite hosts are doing a bit better in the core 55+ demo, but worse in the 25-54. The difference, however, is very small in both demographic groups.

I don't live in Western Washington, so I don't miss the local angle. For my money, being a fogey, the music is improved.

But as an ex-broadcaster, I don't see the music appealing at all to a younger demo.

And I do enjoy Wink Martindale, Gary Owens & Peter Marshall.

If using the satellite helps keep my music coming over the air, then I'm all for it.

Sounds boring compared to it's former self. The constant "today in history" breaks with Wink reciting some boring factoid like "Today in 1851 Eli Whitney invented the cotton gin. Now here's Lawrence Welk". That's entertainment? It's a pathetic waste of 50,000 watts. Put some real jocks on and promote that puppy.

I'm sure Sandusky is saving a few grand a year (Nobody there was exactly getting rich from what I've heard) but how can the staff in that building be proud of that product? Inspite of what the bean counters say, pride in crafting a good product does matter.

I'd love to see somone put some FM competition on and go after KRWM's upper and KIXI's lower demo. Do a hybrid female appeal oldies/AC format that targets 44-55 females. You won't get filthy rich, but you'd make some money and the station would generate an extremely loyal P1 audience of under-served boomers. It would perform well for it's advertisers.

Interesting to see what happens once the PPM hits Seattle. KIXI's numbers are built on reported TSL which tends to drop significantly with the PPM vs. diary.

KIXI's Spring book should have solid numbers that will hold good potential,
with their one-year anniversary to MOYL being this June 1st -

Can't believe it's been a full year without MORTON at night; June 9, 2003 was the day he came back...

...bet he still misses his floating 'Mortini'

ratings are about the same and think of the amount of money they're saving...regardless of whether or not we like the sound of it, if the listeners are staying then Sandusky made the right move. Radio is a business not a public service. If Sandusky put money into promoting KIXI and kept the live jocks, they'd still have the same ratings as they do now. I do agree with the boring hosts (very WKRP before the flip lol) but where else can you find that music in Seattle?!? It's like buying a beer at Safeco. You may not want to pay $8 for that beer, but what other choice do you have if you want it? Just the same, KIXI listeners may not want to listen to the Music of Your Life jocks, but what other choice do they have if they want to hear that music?

Beerman,

Sad, but you're right. Too bad there's just not enough $$ for some competition to give Sandusky a run for the "Boomer-demo money".
Willing to bet about about 80% of what KIXI "bills" is value added for another Sandusky FM buy.

With money getting tighter, the jocks and PD are jumping ship at MOYL:

LARadio.Com writes about money woes at Music Of Your Life. Financial issues have resulted in some Los Angeles veterans leaving the Adult Standards network. Gone are PD Chuck Southcott, OM Karl Southcott, and now Wink Martindale. Gary Owens is only doing weekends now.

Looks as though Sandusky may have to make some big decisions regarding 880 soon.
