Did MY Network TV "Save" any TV stations??

I was wondering if any of the station left without an affiliation because of the WB and UPN marriage would've gone dark or become infomercial stations if MYTV hadn't stepped in to give them some product. I realize it ain't much, product wise, but was wondering if any of the now affiliated MNTV stations would've gone dark or been left with 24 hour a day infomercials?

Yes, several stations were saved from Bars and Tone.

But just barely.

And in some markets, B and T won.

WSBK-TV (IND) channel 38 of Boston went back to being an independent with MY going to channel 50 in Derry, NH. How is WSBK fairing?

That's a gross overexaggeration on the impact of the loss of WB and UPN.
Those networks represented 2 hours of programming out of a 24 hour day.
I doubt ANY station would have gone dark if My Network had not come along.
Something else would have filled the void on those stations. Movies, news, sports, or syndicated fare would have filled those hours just fine. My Network is just an inexpensive solution for all of those stations.

We shall see how stations such as WSBK, KTXA, KBWB will fare. As tested said, it was only two hours of primetime programmign(although WB/CW have the 3-5PM block that use to be Kids WB now WB/CW Daytime), so it wouldn't matter that much. Although both WSBK and KTXA are owned by CBS...yet just by going independent doesn't mean doom. Sure the golden age(1975-1995) of independent stations are over, but if a station has a heart strong enough, they could be successful.

The only station that has gone indy from the CW merger and MNTV founding and has had problems that I've heard of is WBQC-CA in Cinncinati in that they were dropped by the local cable system.

I agree.

Look at KWHD 53 here in Denver. It's mostly religion (READ 95% Religion), yet they also air cheap syndicated programming like NASCAR Angels and LIVE sports broadcasts from ESPN Plus as well as reruns of shows like Bonanza. They also air local High School and local College sports events too.

Does THIS look like a station in dire straits and in need of network affiliation?

I don't think so....

Cheers :D

KTXA is carrying news in prime time (unless pre-empted by the Mavs) ala KCAL.

Well going dark is probably a bit much, but I wonder if any of them would've turned into 24 hour a day infomercials ???

Not likely - unless UPN or WB was their only non-infomercial programming before the networks went away.

Which is why it was such a mistake to start MyNet in the first place... it was a grab for Fox to keep their non-Fox stations going independent.

WSBK has CBS to back them up now, but I think even then, in any circumstance, they would have to keep on rolling along (business as usual). Do you really think that UPN helped 38 out one bit, especially towards the end? Now, they have tremendous flexibility. They ran Election Coverage, sporting events, etc. during prime-time in which UPN probably wouldn't like it. They didn't have to re-schedule UPN programming those nights, and based on the ratings of UPN shows, Dr. Phil, Jeopardy! and the News at 9:30 are still better I would think.

ALSO...I have nothing against The CW or My Network TV, but they seem too generic to me. All of their stations have to display the same logo with their channel number next to it. At least with UPN and The WB, stations can do whatever they wanted with their station identification. At least WSBK had the chance to create their own unique image, one that was once legendary.

Though in many markets, many stations (especially CW), don;t use a channel number, calling themselves "[geographical area]'s CW". Here in the Tampa Bay area, we have "CW44" on WTOG, but on WTTA, the "38" went out with the WB, as they're now called "My Network TV Tampa Bay".

And just how many indie stations does CBS have now - TWO (KCAL 9 LA & KTXA 21 DFW)?

You don't see CBS scrambling to form a network for either of these stations to grab onto, do you? FOX only had ONE before the merger of UPN and The WB (That being KDFI 27 DFW).

A company like LeSea would DROOL to have powerful stations like KTXA & KDFI in their fold.

Cheers :D

CBS has 3 indies now (not 2) - KCAL/9, KTXA/21 & WSBK/38

Also, Fox had several stations before the merger - WWOR/9, KCOP/13 and KTXH/20 come immediately to mind (in addition to long-time Fox-owned Indy KDFI/27).

Pat was right in that Fox only had one indie, but IIRC, they also had nine stations that were losing their UPN affiliation and would have gone indie as well, so a network with ten stations in the top markets actually did make sense. I'm not crazy about the programming they chose for their new network, but I give them full marks for trying something out of the ordinary. That's a rare thing in TV lately, it seems.
