Did "The Truckin' Bozo" on WLW quit playing music?

I think so. It seems to only be talk nowadays. I remember it was where I first heard "You Are What I Am" by Gordon Lightfoot (I'll bet you've heard it!), which "bubbled under" the Top 100 charts at #101 in 1973, yet it reached #32 on the Adult Contemporary charts. I think it performed better in his native Canada. Other songs I remember were "Fly Away" and "Shadows" by country stars Don Williams and Gene Watson, respectively, which never made the top 100 on the country charts.

I miss all that music they played!

First of all the Truckin Bozo retired from that show several years ago and his son Steve has taken over (the original Bozo last I knew was doing a show on XM) and last I knew the American Trucker Network was playing a small amount of music.

The Senior Bozo stopped playing music a long time ago, mostly because of the ridiculous ASCAP and BMI fees. It cost over a million dollars a year for midnight to 5am. Those fees were based on the highest priced commercial on the station - not in the daypart the music is played - on the whole station. So the ads that ran in Bengals programming set the license fees for overnights. Ludicrous. Changing from a music-based program to an occasional music license made it reasonable.

Notice no one mentions the ASCAP and BMI charges when discussing the proposed royalty fees pondered for radio?

Eventually music was brought back as there was the option of a per-program license. When I've heard music more recently it's been a mix of country and classic rock
