Interesting, because they lost about 60 miles of coverage up North! yes, they are HD. I travelled to Houston enough to know I wasn't getting skip on KLDE, before IBOC they reached Centerville, after IBOC conversion they barely reach Huntsville. Of course that is on a souped up Pioneer Supertuner. The average listener in the Woodlands and Conroe probably can't get them any more.
I now listen to "The Point" when I'm in between Dallas and Houston, since KLDE is GONE in many areas it previously covered. I had one poster say that signal loss due to IBOC could be up to 60%. Again, the Eastern 1/3 of the country presumes to tell the Western 2/3 what is best for us. For a station in the densely populated East, 30 or 40 mile coverage is great, any more and you are into the territory of a neighboring city. But out here in Texas, you want to squeeze every last mile of coverage out, because some suburbs are in medium or even deep fringe areas.
The antenna arrays in both Houston and Dallas were designed before population shifted to the NE in both areas, leaving coverage poor for arrays way to the Southwest. Houston is seeing a lot of development Northwest now, but coverage even up there is poor. It will get a lot worse if even the most optimistic estimate of only losing 15% power to IBOC is realized. I'll tell you - if I owned a station in either metro area, I would keep pumping out 100k of pure analog off of a 2000 foot tower - and cover the new affluent suburbs, while my competition is struggling to be heard. Any competitive advantage is always welcome, and if the other guys want to hobble their signal for a handful of digital receivers, so much the better for my ratings!
