Did WMKS canibalize WMAG?

Wow! WMAG took it in the shorts 12+! I'm wondering if their own station has hurt them. It might be a combination of Simon improving, KZL sharpening up to fend off a competitor, and WMKS changing format. I have a feeling they're NOT having a ratings party at MAG.

WMKS didn't hurt any station .... WKZL actually showed growth in key demos .... there is really no comparison between WMKS and WMAG .... WMAG demo is significantly older and has been for a number of years.

After listening to MKS, I agree. Couldn't have hurt WMAG. Wonder where their lousy showing came from? They seem to go down significantly every year until the Christmas music thing. I'm pretty certain that WKZL will be just fine with no worries about the new station. BUT, will ge a little interesting with Bob and the Showgram as the new Morning Show in MKS. Murphy's gettin' kind of old and this will be the "New Thang". Those younger audiences are pretty fickle and they'll be tuning in to check it out.

KZL will get hurt.

Even if the new station only peels a share or two away...it will hurt KZL in the demo rankings big time, dropping them out of the top three in say 25-54 and 18-49. This would have been the case WITHOUT the showgram. But with Bob already having some awareness in the market.....they could actually cause some real problems for KZL.

Am I predicting 105.7 beats KZL.....no, but that is not what this move was about. This move by CC was to take KZL down a notch in the big money demos. Only problem is that CC's usually money demo stations (MAG and TQR) aren't in a position to move up in the rankings, cause they are both down in the 7,8,9 range currently.

CC has done the same thing in this market several times.
the Beat VS Jamz
Kiss vs QMG

These moves are never about creating an actual winning radio station...it is all about helping the mainstays in a flanking move. Right now however their "mainstays" kind of suck.
18-49 Rank
TQR 8th
MAG 11th

25-54
TQR 6th
MAG 10th

Excellent assesment, Eyewitness. It's often way too simplistic to think that moves are made merely to create a winning station. When you're dealing with a group of stations, and one is as weak as MKS, it makes sense to use that station for a flanking move. Thanks for your insight.

interesting, you are right, I do know bob is eating this up still, you should hear the promos running on MKS...

Perhaps WMAG's declines have to do with them using the "national" AC playlist from CC (they are sync'ed with WLYT in Charlotte, for one)? Maybe the music has been a large change?

yup, hard to believe running the same music and content in three pretty diverse markets isn't working. Who needs local.Considering MAG virtually owned the at work listening arena for years....this was really stupid.

MAG 25-54 MIDDAYS
FA WI SP
7.8 7.4 3.4 11TH

18-29 MIDDAYS
6.2 5.7 2.9 10TH

Time to get out the Jingle Bells. Christmas in September anyone?

In addition to WMAG, I know at least these stations are "in sync" also (yes.com came in handy) using Premium Choice:

WLYT/Charlotte
WASH/DC
WBBQ/Augusta, GA
WNIC/Detroit
WOOD/Grand Rapids, MI
WMXL/Lexington, KY
