DID WOKI ever play Bette Midler-THE ROSE back in 1980?

DID WOKi play this, or were they more shying away from non rock product at the time?

When "The Rose"-Bette Midler was out in the Spring 1980, WOKI was running a Top-40 format. After WBIR-FM switched from Country to Album Rock in August 1979, WOKI slowing began switching to a Top-40 format and started playing less Rock cuts. By the end of the year, WOKI's playlist had a lot more in common with WNOX and WRJZ than it did with WIMZ.

I think there has been far too much talk about WOKI having been a "rock" station and whether it did or did not play certain "Top-40" or "CHR" hits. They played the hits, provided they were in the "top 40" of the Billboard "Hot 100" chart.

Everything from Maureen McGovern to Pink Floyd. And, yes, even the disco stuff.

At one point I believe Bette Midler did have rock credentials of some sort. I remember MTV playing her "Beast of Burden" video with Mick Jagger in it quite frequently. It wasn't until the late '80s when she became soft AC material exclusively.

Well im thinking of starting an 80s early 90s stream and calling it I-100 and wanted to know what i should or shouldnt play,, Of course i cant use the WOKI Calls since their in use, but I can make a tribute stream and run old liners....

Track down one of the Pirkles. I'm sure they would be more than happy to lend you all the support you want. I understand Jr. is itching to get back in to the scene.

I happen to have johns contact info,, though I cant give it out to no one,,, and I am going to get full permission and make sure what he says i can or cant legally do. he may like or dislike the idea, but if its done, it needs done right.

BTW,, i would like to put a network of part 15 TXs in KNOX with an 80s format,,, similar to the guy at 98.1,,, but I want it to be legal and have some local feel.. i dont live in KNOX anymore, so can I maintain this... My girlfriend that lived in the tri cities broke up on DEC 16th...HER LOSS... so I dont know when i will be in Knoxville again. Anyway, I know a guy that runs an I-100 tribute site already, but doesnt any longer run the stream,, so if i pay the performance royaltys, and program the station, i may be able to put my stream hosted on his site. Im sure even JP doesnt know exactly every song they played,, he says they were never Top 40,, but they just programed popular music that worked in similar markets... BTW I currently run a stream with a dance format, but im thinking of ditching it for 80s pop/rock and changing the name to I-100,, which I can legally do,, but I need JPs Support and Permission to use the WOKI calls, and even then,, citadel could sue me,, so i think Im gonna just go with the I-100 name... No one outside of east Tennessee is gonna remember this station anyway.

Outside of possibly the calls you don't need anyone's permission to do any of that.

JP jr. was the Asst. PD and MD for I-100. He would know what was and was not played during that period, as well as what was played previous to that as he has all the playlists/airchecks/tapes and other assorted memorabilia tucked away in a warehouse in Farragut.

I just dont see how I can do this since I live in indiana now.. My girlfriend broke up with me, so i dont know when or if i will be in Knox anytime soon. The Pirkles have my email, so they can hit me up and tell me whether i should dump dance for 80s retro using the old airchecks and liners,, I dont even know if i can legally air the old mitch craig sweepers.
