Going on midnight and the signal is strong but sounds muffled by way of the IBOC. Just observing, is all.
Edited by JoeyDee_WOGL on 09/19/05 04:03 AM.

The best way to tell if the IBOC is on is to tune to an adjacent channel (940 or 960, in the case of WPEN). If the IBOC is on, you will hear a LOUD, obnoxious hiss that sounds like the white noise of an FM receiver that is not tuned to any station. The muffled sound is caused by the audio filters used to make WPEN's analog component compatible with IBOC. If the filters are in use at night, when the IBOC should be off, the station will still sound like crap.
There must be a special place in Hell for the propeller heads who invented the AM form of IBOC and for the hucksters who promote it as the best thing to happen to radio since Marconi sent the letter "s" across the Atlantic in Morse Code.
For what it's worth, they weren't running IBOC last night (Monday evening).
I live about three miles from the night site, and believe me, there was no IBOC hiss on 960 or 940. Some splatter, yes, as you would expect, but otherwise a nice, rich AM signal. <sigh>
