Did WQMS 1500 in Quitman Drop Dead?

If the listing is WQMS, and he gets someone to pay $125,000 that would mean that he will sell that station for ten times what he bought it for without doing a damn thing to it. That wouldn't be too shabby on his part, but the poor guy that buys it would probably feel gangraped when he found out what it was purchased from the last owner for.

I've tried contacting both the attorney, Scott Cinnamon and the owner, Mark Hellinger.. neither have answered me back.

I've asked some pretty simple questions.. 1.) What are the future plans? 2.) Would the owner be interested in selling it?

Oh well, we'll wait and see...

Hmmmmm... I was at the site recently (within the past few months) and didn't notice any problems with the tower or antenna system. I actually powered up the AM transmitter while there. Couldn't run any audio, but the transmitter came up to full power according to the meters. I think the problem is finding another location for the transmitter site.

I made an offer on this station, for which the owner would double his money, having done nothing. I was turned down!

I just realized, I mis-spoke.. the licensee is Simcha Hellinger, not Mark. there are two Hellinger's in radio.. both with the same attorney, but not related... however they both own radio stations in the South.

Lash...If you ever make headway with WQMS, lemme know.

Quarterbacking?

This station was listed on the internet as " For Sale"...where were all interested buyers then? Get your money ready and make an offer...Monday Morning Quarterbacking is just that....TOO LATE...thanks...JBI

Maybe when they offered it for sale on EBAY for $50..$75..$100K the people with the money thought that was TOO much!!

O.K....My message was not received...If you have money and they know it, you can deal. If you don't they won't. So get the MONEY first. The world is full of lookers and dreamers...but few buyers...The British have a term for it...if you are coming with authority (Money) you have Portfolio. If you dont, you are without Portfolio...Only you know where you are, and NEVER deal without folio ...and be willing to let the other party know you have it. Take it or leave it and never negotiate without it....or it will come to naught...only the facts...ask any broker who carefully
reviews the buyers (Portfolio) before even dealing with him....Thanks JBI

I don’t think it could ever be said any better that that….. Tire kickers take heed!

They're called "Tower Kickers" gentlemen. And I don't kick them, unless I'm serious. But to purchase something for $12,500 and then offer it up at $90,000, still dark, with no improvements, is just plain wrong.

Purchasing this property still means another $25,000 in improvements to get it back on the air.

Let me know when this guy is serious about selling, and I'll write a check.

Lash:

Have you been there to see the WQMS property and facilities?

I haven't, but I know some who have, and what's there, what works, etc....

I've asked to visit several times. No response. Guess you have to buy it sight unseen.

I know someone who tried to buy it and was pretty close to signing a deal.... he asked for the keys several times to do a pre-inspection before closing, he walked away after the previous owner refused to give them to him.

I know the transmitter needs work, if not total replacement. I think the studio could use seirous updating too!!

I know that town, I have relatives there, all in the grave yard now sadly. Was last there about ten, fifteen years back. Radio sounded real poor and the market was real weak due to bad economics of the area. I can't imagine it has gotten any better and the last time I spoke with the folks down there, they were pretty down on the economic situation at the time. I guess there is no more than 3000 souls in the whole town. Knowing all that, I just wonder why there is so much interest in being in ownership in that market where there is so little revenue in ad sales alone or other upside potential? Too far away from Meridian or Laural to pull much from there. Help me understand this, old man wants to know.

I've been there. The transmitter was supposedly fixed by a guy from Jackson - but it went down almost immediately. Paid in cash - what are you going to do? Waste of $500.

The transmitter is housed with the FM there, owned by EMF (I believe). EMF allows (because of former owner of the FM) the AM to be housed in the office building. New owner will have to have a tower and new location for it (unless lease is worked out with EMF, but the current land is not very good place for tower).

The last time the transmitter was on - when the engineer patched it and left - it was bleeding over into the FM signal. But since it went down again on it's own, it was never, to my knowledge, turned on again.

True it's a poor area, but it supported it's FM country station well enough - compared to other small market radio - so sales are there.

Worth $10,000 for a fun little station that could earn a few thousand a month, but not much more.

It will absolutely NEED new transmitter (don't let anyone tell you they can fix it), New tower, and new studio. (Unless, as stated above, EMF allows to continue operating out of the building).

Good luck -

let me know what happens, Chris.....

Proud to own AN full service station ...

shouldn't that be "own A full service ..."

Anyway, wonder what true value of this station would be? how do you put an offer in - based on what?
