Did WRKO Air "Dead Kennedys" Track on Savage Show Last Night?

L

According to mediamatters.org, Michael Weiner Savage played a track by the Dead Kennedys on his show Tuesday night. I believe WRKO airs a tape-delayed version after Red Sox games. Does anybody know if WRKO played that segment of the show?

Bill O'Reilly always makes the point that there is far more vitriol on the left than there is on the right.

Will someone please direct Mr. O'Reilly to the AOL.com site. Check the comments under the Kennedy story. Literally thousands of sick, twisted comments. Like "Its a shame there wasn't three bullets"......."I hope he dies soon so he can rot in hell"........etc etc. Most can't even spell simple words.

This is the crowd that is always talking about the immoral Hollywood crowd, dirty rappers and the Godless Liberals who have coarsened society.

As far as Weiner is concerned, maybe he'll talk about how he wishes that Kennedy would get AIDS and die.

These talk hosts are the descendants of the snake oil salesmen who used to pull into a town and sucker the rubes. Their snake oil is their premium websites and newsletters.

the thing about Dead Kennedys and their vocalist Jello Biafra in particular is they were equally critical of the Democrats as well as the Republicans. The original version of "California Uber Alles" is about Jerry Brown, who was the governor when the song was written. A later version was about Reagan. Anyway, despite the name, the DKs never mentioned the Kennedys in any of their songs. The band was named to provoke a reaction...

in any case, just the sort of class that one would expect from Savage. I wonder if he'll mark the first anniversary of the death of Jerry Falwell this wee. He could play the DKs "Moral Majority" in his honor. :D

I'm a conservative. Though I understand Savage has a reputation for being a political bomb thrower, this was, in my view...tacky and uncalled for.

The right should not stoop to the tactics often seen by extremists on the other side. That having been said, I acknowledge the right has extremists, too.

Have we verified that it actually aired on WRKO?

"It's the suede denim secret police ... they have come for your uncool niece ..."

I don't see where it would be a problem to play a DKs song because none of them mention the Kennedys at all.

I guess I should have released "My gun has killed less people than Ted Kennedy's car" a bunch of years ago instead of sitting on it. Now it just seems sad and tasteless.

It's not like they played that Misfits song "...Texas is the reason, The presidents dead"

Who cares? It's a band name... for every person who loved Ted Kennedy around here, there are five that hate the man and what he's done for the country (or didn't do). That said this is a radio board, and you didn't even listen to the Savage show to hear what bumper music he had. If you didn't listen to the show how can you complain about it? Lighten up

"Bullet"... and it was responsible for providing the name of one of the worst bands of the 90s, Texas Is The Reason. And there's the Avengers' "The American In Me" which wonders whether Kennedy was murdered by the FBI.

OK--back to the radio thing...

Apparently none of you heard the segment. So, it probably didn't air.

Thing is...it wasn't just the song. There were drop-ins of Arnold stating "It's not a tumor" and other various classless commentary from the host.

Brain cancer....not funny.

The target of ridicule should be deserving. Had Kennedy been caught doing something suspect, all bets are off. But, the man has a life-threatening malady. Out of his control, and through no fault of his own.

There's just no payoff there.

I have the quintessential bad-taste joke ready to go. But, for once...restraint is being exercised.

I really want to unleash it though.

I think they did air it, about 12:30 am. MS was delayed due to Sox game. Just hit the button for 680
and heard a bit of the song, but not much else (switched station). I do remember the band had an album
called Give Me Convenience or Give Me Death and the lyric booklet had a page for "Too Drunk to F---"
which had a mockup of a 45 called "TED Kennedy's Too Drunk To Swim b/w PRAY, Mary Jo--Available
At Hall Of Records, Chappaquiddick, Mass."

Jello Biafra at one point mentioned why he named the group that. I do know there have been band names
like Scraping Foetus off The Wheel, and another group was called "A.C." for short (the A stood for Anal
and I won't mention what the C stood for). Another group, The Butthole Surfers, was called The B.H.
Surfers in stuff like Globe concert reviews. On one of his spoken word albums, Biafra (who entered
the world as Eric Boucher) had a bit called "Names For Bands" in which he suggested Failure (some group
took him up on it), and also pictured a heavy metal band called...Mondale! "But don't use 'Dead
Kennedys'. That one's been taken."

Mr. Biafra came in fourth in a field of seven candidates for Mayor of San Francisco in 1979.

Savage himself was pointing out the lyrics to California Uber Alles and how they referred to fascism
from the _Left_ (see Media Matters page about it). (A local band, the Mighty Ions, once did a song
about a wrestler to the tune of "California": "His name is Pedro/Pedro Morales..."

This is a rare example of being able to hear punk on the AM dial. (Two others: The Darmouth College
AM station running punk, reggae, etc...also remember when WLYN 101.7 was "Y-102" and simulcast
on AM? You'd tune to AM 1360 and hear stuff like Mission of Burma "That's When I Reach For My
Revolver". Here's a name from the past: Rich Anzalone.

And he can play Teletubbies drops during the song... "Again! Again!"

well, except for my show on A-B Free. Ummm... never mind. No one could hear it until we became a pirate station. Rich Anazalone's show was fantastic. He played the DK's "Too Drunk..." and had to bleep out quite a few words. The station didn't actually become Y-102 until after he was fired. It also became a much less interesting station. Rich ended up at WMWM for awhile, right Bob?

Yeah I forgot about ABFR! And Rich was our tech. advisor for a brief time in the early 80s, as was
Michael Bright if that name rings a bell with anyone.

OK on it becoming Y-102 after he left. I do know there was an album by the Mighty Ions, or was it the
Swinging Erudites, that has a quote on the back from "Coach Tom Lane, 'Y-102'"...

it was the Ions. They have a CD anthology out that not only includes "Pedro Morales" but also their tribute to George "The Animal" Steele. Swinging Erudites big hit was a parody of the Bangles' "Walk Like An Egyptian," retitled "Walk With An Erection. " Masterminded (oof) by the one and only Johnny Angel/Wendell, a fine talk host in LA and occasional substitute elsewhere

there's also a band called the Ted Kennedys. They sent me a demo last year. No references to Uncle Ted in the lyrics or titles.

I didn't hear it on WRKO but I did hear it on another station outside of the market. Reminds me of when Howie Carr devoted an hour of his show to "dead Kennedy" jokes after JFK Jr.'s plane was recovered with no survivors back in 2000.

Just the fact that you have a joke and want to tell it so badly speaks volumes Mr. Ex-Boston Jock.

You make it sound like being "Mr. Ex Boston Jock" is a bad thing. Which speaks equal volumes.

Not only do I want to tell it...I have told it to several people. And every one of them laughed.

Guess we're all horrible people. With the ability to laugh at inappropriate humor...And the class to discriminate between what's suitable for on-air, and private joking.

Something Mr. "Savage" is obviously unable to figure out.

Thanks for keeping it professional. :)

Happy Memorial Day!

I think there's a discernable difference here.

Being diagnosed with a brain tumor is not the result of his own stupid decision making, and therefore off the table for making fun on the air. Savage took cheap shots at an innocent. That's his M.O. He's LCD radio...and heard all over America...what does that say about what works?

However...JFK Jr. was an incompletely trained pilot, flying during conditions he was untrained to operate in, unable to operate the necessary instrumentation needed for his flight, and egotistically undertook the endeavor. His crash was the result of arrogance. For me...if you're a public figure, and you act like an idiot, you deserve all the ridicule possible.

Apples & Oranges.

Which is why I wouldn't make fun of Ted for the brain cancer. No payoff. Just comes off as mean-spirited and wrong.

Brain cancer....not funny. I will make jokes about anything, but cancer is strickly off-limits. There's nothing funny about it. Savage is truely classless, now there's a shocker. In another board, I mentioned how I couldn't stand Ronald Raygun. But...I don't wish alzmeimers on anyone and I hold high regard for Nancy Reagan for dealing with that difficult situation.

Is Hillary Clinton lead-singer for the Dead Kennedys? Just wondering. All this angst over Savage really ought to directed to Ms. Pants Suit.
